Crafted with inspiration from the iconic 356A Speedster, this Porsche replica was assembled by the current owner between 1984 and 1986, and has remained in their possession since. It comes finished in red over black upholstery and is powered by a 1971 Volkswagen dual-port flat-four engine with twin Kadron carburetors paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes a cassette stereo, fire extinguisher, Nardi steering wheel, front sway bar, independent rear suspension, and much more. Reportedly driven approximately 61k miles since its completion, this Speedster replica is now being offered for auction at no reserve out of Maine.

This Speedster replica comes finished in red and rides on slotted chrome 15” wheels with Porsche-crested centers. Details include gold-anodized model designations, chrome trim, headlamp grilles, teardrop-style taillights, dual exhaust outlets, and side curtains for the convertible top. The seller describes the fiberglass bodywork as being in driver's condition, with minor paint chips and scratches evident, while noting that the top is in poor condition.

The cabin presents black vinyl upholstery complemented by a body-colored dashboard and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. Other equipment includes a suite of instrumentation, lap belts, a passenger’s side grab handle, a cassette stereo, door-mounted speakers, and a fire extinguisher.  The gauges and stereo are reported to be in working order.

Power is provided by a 1971 Volkswagen dual-port flat-four engine with twin Kadron carburetors, driving the rear wheels through a Volkswagen 4-speed manual transaxle. Performance equipment includes a front sway bar, independent rear suspension, front disc brakes, and height-adjustable front axle beam. The seller states the second gear synchro is weak and the top-end was rebuilt approximately 10k miles ago using new pistons, cylinders, and dual-port cylinder heads.

This sale will include a clean title, a car cover, the original assembly manual & sales brochure, and a host of documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “I am selling this replica Speedster for my friend Doug who assembled this between 1984 and 1986.  He has recently retired and moved from New Hampshire to Colorado to be closer to his family.  After 40 years and over 60,000 fun miles, he has decided to let her go.  It has a few faults but still delivers a great wind in your hair experience (for those of us who are lacking hair it will be a great wind in your face experience).  The engine runs great and pulls hard.  I will be happy to answer any questions.  This a no reserve auction and it will sell to the highest bidder.  Thank you.”

Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense.

  • twin-grille-roadster (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

If you rush the shift it will grind. If you shift slowly it does not grind. I is better upshifting than downshifting.

So it's second gear synchro is weak. Is it grinding going into 2 while upshifting and downshifting?

  • badboybuses (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

Oh good. Wouldn't look right on a classic replica.

  • twin-grille-roadster (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

It is between Porsche Ruby Red and Porsche Signal Red. It is not candy apple red.

  • badboybuses (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

Is the color on this thing like candy apple red? Seems really different. Not the normal red.

Apologees for the miscommunication on my part. purchaser would enter the payment to the 3rd party escrow company prior to shipper picking up vehicle. At that point purchaser would have no way to claw back the paybment unless the didn't exist . As soon as shipper communicates that vin matches and car exists, escrow would be released. Escrow would be cleared to seller long before car arrives to purchaser. There would be no path for purchaser to claim car isn't what they want after it is shipped because the deal is done by then. I'm not familiar with this auction site and have actually won a vehicle that didn't exist in the past on a well known auction site. That's why I would be interested in a third party escrow company where existence of car could be verified prior to shipping. I understand if you don't want to do that. I'm just not super tech savvy and I would just rather pay a third party escrow for the peace of mind to know there's no chance my payment would vanish into a hole if I sent a shipping company to pick up a vehicle that was purchased through pictures on the internet. If curious about what I described, escrow.com, Thank you.

I have sold and helped friends sell a few cars through PCarMarket with no issues. For example, a 1968 BMW R50 motorcycle, a 1974 Porsche 911 Targa, a Beck 550 Spyder, a 1994 C2 Cabriolet, a 1983 Porsche 911SC,and a few others with no issues. All of the vehicles have been shipped. Not one other person has asked to use escrow. As mentioned in the listing I am helping a friend sell this car. So the car leaves here with the title and no payment. And then someone decides if the title matches the car (which it does) and then we wait for payment. I think we'll pass on this arrangement. Thank you for your interest.

@twin-grille-roadster I would not think it would be quite fair to you as you describe. The car gets shipped and escrow is dependent upon there being a car as described and a title that matches the car. Shipper could verify the vin and escrow would be released. Once the car is in the hands of the shipper, my auto insurance policy and the shipping companies insurance would take over from there for any damage related to shipping. Escrow.com is a pretty well known company that handles situations as described.

  • twin-grille-roadster (seller) 7 months, 1 weekago

So the car gets shipped to and if you don't like it, then what? Who pays to ship the car back and we have to start all over again with another auction? What if the car gets damaged in shipping?

  • Athcar (registered bidder) 7 months, 1 weekago

I'm interested but wouldn't be able to pick this up in person. Would you allow, paid for by the purchaser, the use of an escrow service for this sale? thanks.

There is a rust spot on the bottom of the frame head as pictured that measures approximately two inches by three inches. It looks like an easy repair. The same spot on the other side appears to be solid.

  • TheVintageCarGuy 7 months, 1 weekago

@MJK29340 Seriously? Did you even bother to look at the pictures? Try picture 106, that should answer your question.

Rust or Corrosion Anywhere on this car?

The seats are reproduction Speedster seats. As such they do not recline just like real speedsters. They do adjust forward and back. There is some similar minor crazing in the front that I was unable to get a good picture of. Thanks for your interest.

  • TheVintageCarGuy 7 months, 1 weekago

@twin-grille-roadster Two questions. The seats are clearly fixed back, but do they adjust for driver position front to back? And the car appears to have been tapped in the rear at some time. Does the cracking and crazing in photo 37 and 39 appear anywhere else on the car?
