Available for auction is an original painting by Karen Barrow featuring a 1965 Porsche 356C being offered by the HW Gallery. This original piece is composed of mixed media on canvas over a wood frame using a silver background with gray, ivory, and white elements that set off the Yale Blue car and measures 36” x 36”. Upon graduation from secondary school in 1965, Miles Collier was given a brand-new 356C. It was painted “Yale Blue” as a nod to his college, and the center spear was removed to give the hood a sleeker look. As a successor to the B, A, and pre-A models, the 356C was the final development of a series begun a decade and a half earlier with the Gmünd coupe.
Artist Karen Barrow, based in Naples, often finds the Revs Institute and Collier’s collection of rare automobiles the perfect muse for her paintings. Wandering through the collection, she follows her instinct as to what to photograph and how to capture the story of the rolling sculptures in each painting. Inspired by Robert Rauschenberg, who declared “The artist’s job is to be a witness to his time in history”, Barrow documents automotive history, whether it is of personal or international importance.
