Up for auction at no reserve is this 1964 Studebaker Commander Sedan. Based on the Studebaker Lark, the Commander was introduced in 1964 and was restyled with a new full-width stamped aluminum grille and squared-off headlamp surrounds, along with subtle changes to the body lines. Commander models came standard with single headlamps, and this example features the optional dual lamp configuration. It is said to have spent most of its life under the care of the original owner’s family in California before eventually moving to the Northeast. Complete with its owner's guide and accessory books, this Commander is now being offered for auction without reserve by its seller out of Connecticut.
This Commander is finished in Bermuda Brown Metallic with chrome brightwork and a contrasting white-painted roof. This sedan wears steel bodywork penned by industrial designer Brooks Stevens who was also responsible for the design of the original Jeep Wagoneer. The seller notes surface rust visible within the engine compartment and the lower trunk pan, and that the vehicle is believed to retain much of its factory-applied undercoating; additional photos are provided in the gallery. 15” steel wheels wear chrome Studebaker hubcaps and American Classic bias-ply whitewall tires that show date codes from 2019.
Inside, the cabin accommodates six passengers on twin bench seats covered in metallic brown vinyl and cloth upholstery. The dashboard shows cracks from sun exposure as depicted in the photo gallery. Features include a two-spoke steering wheel, chrome toggle switches for heat and defrost, a combination gas, temperature, oil, and amperage gauge, an analog clock, and a 120-MPH speedometer with a five-digit odometer showing just over 61k miles. All accessories are reported to be in working order aside from the stock push-button AM radio mounted in the center of the padded dash.
This Commander carries a 170ci inline 6-cylinder engine equipped with a single two-barrel carburetor paired with a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. The Commander for the 1964 model year features an X-braced frame, counterweighted corners, independent front suspension, and a solid rear axle on leaf springs. The seller reports the braking and fuel systems have recently been refreshed.
