The 356C represents the final evolution of Porsche’s original sports car, introduced for 1964 with four-wheel disc brakes, improved suspension, and reinforced synchronizer rings for its 4-speed manual transaxle. This 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe is refinished in Irish Green over tan upholstery and has been upgraded with a 1,720cc "big bore" kit, SC camshafts, Solex carburetors, lowered suspension, Koni shocks, a Leistritz muffler, and more. The third owner acquired the car in March 1967 for $2,750, shortly after becoming a devoted PCA member. It served as a daily driver for a decade before being stored for nearly 20 years, then underwent a three-year ground-up restoration beginning in 1999 by the late renowned restorer Gary Kempton. Following its sale in 2021, Porsche specialist Canepa performed a full mechanical and cosmetic inspection, road test, and a 100-hour concours-level detailing of the exterior, interior, and undercarriage. Accompanied by comprehensive documentation, this numbers-matching, beautifully presented example is available for auction out of Pennsylvania.

As part of the thorough restoration that began in 1999, this 356C Coupe received bodywork, a refinish in Irish Green, and restored chrome trim. Exterior details include a decklid with twin engine grilles, chrome bumpers with integrated rear exhaust outlets, a polished driver’s side mirror, gold model lettering, pop-out rear quarter windows, and 15” slotted wheels mounted with 2021 Pirelli P6000 tires. Following its sale in 2021, the exterior was treated to a concours-level detailing by Canepa as part of their extensive and meticulous “Canepa Difference” process. A collection of detailed images is provided in the gallery.

The cabin is trimmed in tan leather with matching square-weave carpeting, contrasted by a body-colored dashboard fascia and black floor mats. Equipment includes front lap belts, manual window cranks, analog VDO gauges, a quartz clock, a heater, and a locking glovebox. A bespoke leather-wrapped steering wheel has been fitted, and all gauges and accessories are confirmed to be in proper working order. The cabin underwent extensive detailing as part of the “Canepa Difference” process.

The car’s numbers-matching flat-four engine has been enlarged to 1,720cc and delivers power to the rear wheels through the original matching 4-speed manual transaxle. Performance enhancements include 911SC camshafts, Solex carburetors, lowered suspension with Koni shocks, a 12-volt electrical conversion, and a Leistritz muffler. During Canepa’s detailing process, a comprehensive mechanical inspection was completed, with all systems thoroughly cleaned, checked, serviced, and restored as needed.

This sale will include a clean title and a host of documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “Offered for sale is this 1964 Porsche 364C Coupe, finished in Irish Green over a tan leather interior, powered by a 1.7-liter Porsche flat four-cylinder engine, running power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, with 44,228 miles showing on the odometer. This is a comprehensively restored and upgraded example of the last version of the legendary 356, with thorough ownership and diligent maintenance history dating back to 1965. Owned by a PCA member for 55 years, the ‘C’ denotes the last factory updates to the 356 chassis, the best representation of the sports car Ferry Porsche originally envisioned. It also benefits from carefully chosen sport-focused upgrades that complement the 356’s driving experience. After being stored for almost 20 years, in 1999, the 356C underwent a ground-up restoration from Gary Kempton. Along with cosmetic restoration, mechanical upgrades included a 6V to 12V electrical conversion, a 1720cc big-bore kit, SC camshafts, Solex carburetors, Koni shocks, and a Leistritz muffler. Following its sale in 2021, renowned Porsche specialist Canepa conducted a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic inspection, as well as a road test, to ensure proper specification. Additionally, a 100-hour concours-level detail was performed on the exterior, interior, and undercarriage. This 1964 356C has a full documented history in binders available for review and remains impeccably maintained and concours-ready in its presentation.”

@fester Take a second glance through the very first photos of the restoration portion that I uploaded. You will see it is green in color before the restoration work began. The flat black and white finishes you see during the restoration work I believe are the primer finishes before the final color coat was put down.

The road tube setup coming off the oil filler can is…um…interesting. This should , on a ‘64 car, be fed into the right hand air cleaner top, but these don’t appear to be stock anyway. The road tube setup on a Euro T6 B with this type of filler has a bracket on the left hand side of the tin where the large tube enters the fan shroud. I’d get proper air cleaners.

From the pictures it looks like, may be it was a black colored car before it was restored ?

@tserv23 I unfortunately do not have anything that is a physical paper copy showing that information. I have full binder full of the restoration pics and the communications/correspondences about its restoration process. This information is from when it was purchased back in 1967 and then stored for a decades and ultimately brought out of storage in 1999 for its restoration process. I will upload the restoration photos to the gallery as well. Thanks!

MikeyT-Do you have any documentation showing the original engine is the one in the car at this time and also that the original color combination is as the car stands now?
    Thanks, TS

MikeyT-Thanks for the reply! I am very interested in the car but wondering without the COA or Kardex how do I know the engine is matching numbers and that the original color combo of the car is Irish Green over tan?
I have never bought a vintage Porsche without a COA or Kardex. Maybe others can enlighten me on making sure of the originality of the car. No doubt it is a very desirable car as it stands.
    Thanks, TS

@DaveWadf I found some paperwork that references the valve adjustment specifications for the camshafts. I am not sure if this is useful to you or not but I figured I would add it to the gallery.

@tserv23 I do not seem to have a COA or Kardex for the car. I have hundreds of pages of the whole restoration process and lots documentation to go with the car but neither of those.

@PCarMark Hi I am handling this online auction for Kasser Motor Group. This vehicle is stored here with us in our climate controlled showroom area along with the owners other 356. We have a clean, lien-free Montana title in his name. There has been no change in ownership since it being listed on KMG website. Let me know if you have any other questions I can help answer for you. Thanks!

Very nice. I believe this was the car previously listed with Kasser MG? Can you elaborate on the chain of ownership?

@Cherche-pepite 1. The clock does not work 2. There are a set of four matching chrome caps included with the sale. I will have @PCarmarket add them to the gallery as well.

Thank you everyone for your comments and bids so far.

@DaveWadf it looks like WolfandMare have answered your question about the cams for you. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

@dougdadmac I am not sure about the "correct" hole positions but if there is anything I look for on the car to help answer something please let me know. I will look to see if there are any additional markings or chassis stamp #'s anywhere else on the car that I may have missed. If so I will surely add them to the gallery.

@WolfandMare Thank you for your input and help on this!

The clock does not work. There is a second set of original chromed wheels that come with the car. They are in perfect condition. The chromed spare wheel in the frunk is part of that set for a total of 5 chromed wheels.

    Two questions:

    1) does the clock not work?

    2) the spare wheel appears to be chromed but the four wheels on the car are not; why is that?

    Thanks.

@DaveWadf : That's easy... you merely JBWeld the 911SC cam on top of the 356's fan shroud (big hit at the local Cars & Coffee!). BTW; nice car.

I am aware that Karmann bodied 356s chassis number starts with 2. Maybe a picture of the chassis # stamp in the front trunk? COA or Kardex? Longitudinal holes could be for Ziebart type treatment. 2 holes at rear of central tunnel like Karmann could also be done I guess since, on closer look, the Large Karmann drain holes in the floors are not there. And I agree @WolfandMare that the hole in the longitudinals don't look correct for Karmann- more like regular drill holes.

  • WolfandMare (registered bidder) 3 days, 23 hoursago

@DaveWadf Looks like a typo in the write-up. The seller's description at the bottom says "SC" camshafts, meaning the 64-65 cams used in the 95hp engines from the 356 SC.

@dougdadmac The holes don't look right to me to be Karmann. Maybe some kind of Ziebart type deal? Hood has no undercoating. Decklid latch doesn't look like it has a number. No plugs in rear footwells. Karmann VINs start with a "2"

  • dougdadmac 3 days, 23 hoursago

Scratching my head on this one. The underside pictures clearly show Karmann floors and longitudinals with their drain holes yet this car is presented as a Porsche Karroserie bodied 356.

@seller I’m not familiar with how a 911sc cam is used in a 356 motor. Can you elaborate on that?
