This 1963 Porsche 356B 1600 Cabriolet was acquired by the seller, its second owner, in January 1997. Originally finished in Champagne Yellow, it has since been refinished in black over matching upholstery and is powered by a Porsche 912-sourced flat-four paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include T6 bodywork, a twin-grille rear decklid, rear-mounted luggage rack, custom tonneau cover, and 15” slotted steel wheels. Reportedly a California car for much of its life, this 356 is now being offered for auction out of Nevada, accompanied by its original engine.

Compared to the earlier T5, the T6 body style introduced in 1962 featured twin engine lid grilles and a relocated fender-mounted fuel filler. This example was originally finished in Champagne Yellow and was refinished in black following the seller’s acquisition. Chrome brightwork accents the exterior, a luggage rack is mounted at the rear, and 15” steel wheels are fitted with newer tires. Minor paint imperfections consistent with age are noted, and detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is appointed with black leatherette upholstery, a black three-spoke steering wheel, and a matching dashboard accented by chrome trim. An AM/FM radio is mounted beneath the dashboard without any modifications. The seller notes that all gauges and accessories are functional apart from the fuel gauge.

Power comes from a Porsche 912-sourced 1.6-liter flat-four engine rated at up to 90 HP, driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes the replacement engine was installed under prior ownership after the original unit developed smoking and low compression. The original engine is said to be included in the sale. Additional work has included a replacement clutch and a full brake system refresh, with regular maintenance performed throughout the seller’s ownership.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, and a battery charger.

The seller would like you to know: “This is a perfect car. It can be driven every day after purchase. I am the second owner.  I acquired it at 45k miles, and it now has 85k miles. I have NEVER driven the car in less than perfect weather. I only put the roof on once per year just to stretch the material, but 95% of the year I drive it with the top down. The car has no rust and has never been in a wreck. It has ALWAYS been garaged. This is as close to a perfect car as one can get from the ’60s. I have loved every minute with this car and am not looking forward to selling it. I am ONLY selling it because I will need to take care of my parents on their farm, and the Porsche would get ruined on a farm. I hope it goes to a good home and to someone that loves Porsches.”

@Carolina_cooled i can say there is no rust on the body/chassis of the 356 because i have seen w my own eyes, i have pictures to show that and a few years ago when i was going to move from CA to NV i took the car to an auto body cuz i was thinking of putting the original paint on and the original motor back in and see it in CA so i wouldnt have to lug the spare motor to NV. The auto body shop found no rust since that has to be taken car of before they can do a complete repaint. Is the car flawless of course not if it was flawless the car would b selling for over 130k

@Vietnam6871 well I personally didnt do anything...the engine was changed out w the original owner. so it was between him and his mechanic. All i know is i have had NO PROBLEMS w that engine...change the oil, give it a tuneup and that things runs great everyday. Porsche made one of the great engines that sounds good, runs good and seems to run 4ever

  • Vietnam6871 (registered bidder) 1 day, 1 hourago

@SurferGab Now I understand. You pulled the Zenith carbs, the oil filler and several other pieces off the original engine and fitted them to the 912 block.

  • flataircooled (registered bidder) 1 day, 2 hoursago

Understood. How about pix of the data plates in the trunk and driver door jamb? Thanks.

  • SurferGab (seller) 1 day, 5 hoursago

@flataircooled unfortunately the only way i can get those numbers is to remove the fan cover. the numbers are not as easily obtainable on the 912 as they are on the 356 motor. i have pix of the original motor and the original motor # ( pix 156 and 157) which is what everyone seems to b most interested in.

  • SurferGab (seller) 1 day, 5 hoursago

@Vietnam6871 hey buddy the motor INSIDE the Porsche is a 1967 912 motor that came from an old wrecked 912 in the 90's. I bought the 356 in 1997 from the original owner who got to old to get in and out of the car. The original owner put the 912 motor in the car because the original motor( photos 156 and 157) was smoking and he lost compression in one of the cylinders. in the1990's those cars were only worth 10-15k and it was cheaper to put another Porsche motor in that to rebuild the old one. The owner stored the original motor in his backyard under a covered area and was going to throw the motor away. When i bought the car he "threw in" the original motor if i wanted it. The original motor has been wrapped in a blanket in a storage shed during the time i have owned it. It probable needs a complete rebuild but as u can tell by the engine # on the photo it is the ORIGINAL engine. the 912 motor in there now runs great and has the extra HP which makes is a fun car to drive. I hope this answers your question

  • SurferGab (seller) 1 day, 5 hoursago

@lgreitzer I am in Las Vegas, NV on the west side in the S. Summerlin area. very flexible on my time today if your friend would like to come by and take a look or a test drive

  • Vietnam6871 (registered bidder) 1 day, 7 hoursago

Please get an image of the engine type that is dead center on the top of the block up against the fan shroud. If it is 616/1 then the block is a 1963 normal. If it is 616/36 then it is a 1967 912.

  • Vietnam6871 (registered bidder) 1 day, 7 hoursago

Can we get a pic of the data plate under the trunk liner? I don's see the data plates inside the driver door jamb, are they missing, or is it just a picture resolution issue? Looks like the engine case timing cover might be blank with no numbers. You should. be able to get a picture of the case stampings on the top of the case between the firewall and fan shroud. Thanks.

  • SurferGab (seller) 2 days, 5 hoursago

@M9246043 no rust in the engine bay but some worn out insulation. 2 years ago i did a COMPLETE brake job on all 4 wheels. Brake cylinders, master cylinder, brake shoes, brake seals, etc. Glass is GREAT..no cracks, no dings ..only thing that looks aged is the rearview mirror. The tires have about 7k miles on them...still have over 1/2 the tread left...u can see from various photos i have uploaded...for instance photo 178 w the tire laying on the floor u can see the good tread left. Yes car is currently in Las Vegas, NV if u wanted to take it for a drive. The car is still registered in CA at my CA residence. Several Porsche gurus told me good idea to keep it as a CA car and the ORIGINAL license plate. Someone might find value in that. There isn't anything that needs to b replaced or repaired everything works and drives great...it is an amazing car to drive and a head turner.

  • M9246043 (registered bidder) 2 days, 5 hoursago

Hi. Picture 147 on the lower left side is that rust/scale in engine bay?

What, and your opinion needs to be replaced mechanically. You mention the body is rust free. How was the glass? Rubber? How old are the tires? When were the brakes last done and I'm sorry if I did not see this is the car currently in Nevada?

    Many thanks

@justlookin1 as someone who owned a 356 hardtop for 1 yr... once u own n drive a convertible u will not b driving the hardtop much. So much easier to get in and out. Plus w the top off u can hear the beautiful sound of that lovely engine. Feeling the sun and wind at your face...u will b hooked. I rarely put the top on. The convertible feels roomier and so much more fun to drive

  • SurferGab (seller) 3 days, 7 hoursago

@justlookin1 I would only be guessing if I said something since I was not underneath the car as my Porsche place would not allow me to go underneath the rack for safety and insurance reasons. The mechanic who took all the photos that everything still looked good as can b for a 62 yr old car. I asked him if there was anything that was looking abnormal and he said no. I have all the service records of my 28 years and there's no notations of anything that needs to be addressed or fixed underneath the car... And if you know anything about those Porsche mechanics they will always come up with something that needs to be done LOL

  • SurferGab (seller) 3 days, 7 hoursago

@Vietnam6871 The car has a 1967 912 motor in it 4 the extra HP. The original motor has been out of the car since I bought it in 1997. The original engine is sitting in a storage shed of which I have provided a photo and the original engine number in my opening comment and can b seen in the photo I have included

  • justlookin1 3 days, 7 hoursago

@SurferGab Top left side of the photo ,that states 179 of 188, just above the brake line. there is a jagged edge to the pan. not sure if metal or under coating that has loosen. Nice car, not being critical. I have a 356 coupe I purchased from the second owner out of AZ. Purchased via photos and videos with no disappointments when she arrived. Looking to purchase a cabriolet. Thanks!.

  • Vietnam6871 (registered bidder) 3 days, 8 hoursago

The cabriolet is a 1963 1600 normal. The engine shown (610812) is most likely the original 60 HP normal engine. Other "normal" features are the tachometer that is redlined at 4500 RPM and the hubcaps. Do you have a 912 engine to go with this 356?

  • SurferGab (seller) 3 days, 8 hoursago

@justlookin1 not sure what u r looking at but if its that discoloration that is just wear from a 62 yr old car. The mechanic who took the photos said it was one of the best original undersides he had seen. No rust, no welds( wrecked cars have those), no leaks. All the brakes were recently done and replaced all the seals. Its one of the few ORIGINAL CA cars that doesn't have rust. The ocean air is not kind to the old cars if they r not garaged. Back in the early days many of those cars unfortunately were kept outside and developed rust... they didn't used to b as valuable a they have become recently

  • justlookin1 3 days, 8 hoursago

Photo #179 of the rear axle. Shows what looks like a patch panel to the floor pan just above the brake line. Any idea of this? Thanks.

@Garden38 the mechanic took photos of everything underneath the car and in the wheel wells. As for photo #47..it was a chip from s surfboard. I covered the chip w touch up paint so the raw metal would not b exposed to the elements along the ocean thus keeping the car rust free. Thought the mechanic did a good job covering the underside of the car

  • Garden38 (registered bidder) 3 days, 17 hoursago

@SurferGab Looks like there aren't any photos of the pan or the underside of the rockers in the recently uploaded photos. In photo 47 the paint in front of the door looks like something was applied to the paint and there was a reaction causing the paint to look weird. Any idea what that is?
Thank you for the additional photos.

NO OIL Leaks, NO rust and NO welding( no wreck) underneath. Hope this helps u

@Garden38 I re shot #47 and uploaded it for u. It still shows the ding made by my friends surfboard. It prob looks a little weird cuz i put touch up paint on the blemish. I lived by the ocean in La Jolla and if any bare metal that salt in the moist air starts those old cars rusting. Hopefully when u see the underside photos u will notice no rust. Back in 1997 when i was looking at 356's in CA it seemed most cars either had rust or had been in a wreck and the 356 didn't run right on the freeway. Porsches weren't super valuable back then and they didn't get the love they garner today. Hope to have those underside pix for u by tomo evening

  • SurferGab (seller) 5 days, 4 hoursago

@Fificox i just uploaded a pic of the original motor and the stamped engine # so u can verify it is the ORIGINAL engine block to this 356. The motor has been wrapped in a blanket for 27 years in my storage shed so it does not show well..ha ha. And the owner b4 me had the motor in an outdoor shed. i bought the car when i lived in Los Altos, CA and moved the car and motor w me when i moved to La Jolla, CA. And now both are w me in Las Vegas, NV

@Fificox yes I have the original engine and have provided the engine# in my opening comment. The engine goes w the sale so if someone wants to put the car to ask original and increase the value the can. I can post a pic of it if u would like. Engine was swapped out w original owner. He had motor sitting outdoors in a shed...he replaced motor cuz it was smoking and had bad compression. In the 90's those cars weren't worth that much so it was no biggie to replace the motor than rebuild the old one. It has been sitting in my storage shed during the 28 yrs I have owned the car. It is 100% the original engine

  • Fificox 5 days, 15 hoursago

    Hi
You mention you have the original engine…
Is it complete? Long block or only the engine case?
Does it comes with the car at the final price? Thanks

  • SurferGab (seller) 5 days, 18 hoursago

@Garden38 i will retake #47 and upload it. there is a small chip on there. My friend was waxing his surboard and it slipped from him and dinged my door. But it doesnt look like that picture....some of the pix were a bit tough cuz it was a 100 degree day in Vegas when we took the photos and some of them have a bit of a reflection. Yes i will do the best i can they usually dont let me in the pit under the car(safety reasons) but i will have the mechanic take the photos u r looking for. I will shoot for Monday but it will b when he has an open bay for me but i will get it done . thnx for your detailed instructions

@SurferGab When photos are taken of the underside make sure that the complete underside is taken in sections, and that the photos are clear. Also photos of suspension with wheels off. Also clear photos of the rockers and the jack points. Also can you retake photo #47 area, looks like the paint is bad, or maybe a reflection is making it look like that.
    Thank you.

That dash sure doesn't appear Champagne Yellow. I agree with @embartz that if the dash paint is original the car was slate grey when new. Engine is Bitsa at this point- unnumbered 3rd piece, Zenith carbs, single heater flapper boxes which could be from the original Normal engine.

@em4bartz from what i have been told by my mechanics over the years is the 912 came w Solex, Webber or Zenith carburetors depending on the performance package... but i can check w my mechanic on Monday. The engine came from a wrecked 1967 wrecked 912

@em4bartz i will get the motor # for u on Monday...it is a 1967 912 motor. verified w the mechanic when i bought it and several of the mechanics who have worked on it have all told me it was a 912 motor. I am the 2nd owner. the Original owner never painted it. He was an older gentleman. I think somewhere in my files i have the original paint color # he gave me in case i wanted to get touch up paint for some of the chips on the front hood from rocks and bugs.

CoA not important to me, but others may care about numbers matching. It does not look like a 912 motor, they had Solex P40 carbs. If the dash is original, it was probably a Slate Gray car originally repainted yellow before you got it.

@dougdadmac dash is original ..only painted the outside of the car in 1999 cuz all the rubber molding needed to be replaced and the original paint was faded. Just didnt want to spend all the money and paint it yellow(original color) again so we sampled some paint colors on an old wrecked 356 and this black seemed to really bring out the coolness of the car the best

hey fellow 356 lovers and Porsche aficionado's hope my photos and video give u a feel for a great 356. I have had it since 1997 and have put 40k loving thrilling miles on it. The car is always an attention grabber w its great styling and beautiful color. As one can see on the driving video it is fun to drive and w the 912 motor has a LOT more giddy up and go than the stock 356 motor. But for the purists i do have the original motor( P*610812*) that has NOT been in the car during my ownership. When i bought the car in 1997 the original owner asked if i "wanted' the original motor cuz it wasn't running and he was just gonna take it to the dump. Back then the 356's and their parts were really not that valuable like they are today. Fortunately, i had room in my garage and a strong back( they are heavy motors) and have stored it ever since. For the nostalgia folks i do have the original DMV envelope the first registration renewal came in( 6 cent stamp on it), the original tools and owners manual. It has been a great car and has been more reliable and less expensive than the many different 911's i have owned while having the 356 under my care. I am in Vegas NOW but i lived in CA most of my life with the car is a CA car and original license plate since day 1. Only in Vegas for a few years so keep the car registered in CA until i move back. Any Q's feel free to ask and i hope to get bk to u as quick as i can

In the photos the dash paint appears to be closer to Slate Grey than Black?

  • SurferGab (seller) 6 days, 4 hoursago

@justlookin1 i have uploaded a few but I am prob gonna have to take it over to my mechanics so he can put it on the hoist so i can take a full underbelly picture for u. NOT a lot of clearance from the ground to the engine to get wide scan photos..but i did take a few for now

@em4bartz the ORIGINAL engine # is P*610812*. the 912 # i have not been able to locate it is not in the same place as the 356 engine #. One of my friends that has a 912 says I might need to pull the fan cover off 2 get it. If I cant find it i will drive it over to my mechanics on Monday and he will dig it out for me. NO Kardex or Cert of Auth. If crucial for u I can get a cert of Auth b4 next Friday. Thank u for your interest
