Available for auction is this 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 Double Cab Pickup finished in two-tone red and white. One of the most iconic automobiles of the era alongside the VW Beetle, the Type 2 was a predecessor to the modern minivan and was offered in several configurations to suit different commercial and recreational needs. This versatile 1962 double-cab pickup is a first-generation Type 2 and was imported to Mexico in 1999 before being restored by its prior owner in 2012. It was recently acquired as part of a private collection and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Mexico City.
This Type 2 comes finished in a classic two-tone red and white theme and features pop-out safari front windows, Empi sidesteps, chrome bumpers, and dual mirrors. The bed is lined with wooden slats and features three individual liftgates that can be folded down to accommodate large or irregular-sized cargo. The seller notes a restoration was completed within the last 10 years, and describes signs of patina and imperfections throughout the body including a scratch inside the tailgate and rust in the engine compartment. Additional images can be found in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in beige vinyl with a rubber floor liner and cloth inlays for the doors and seats. Equipment includes a newer radio, an ivory two-spoke steering wheel, front window vents, sliding side windows, and bench seats with Wolfsburg-crest lap belts.
Power comes from an upgraded 1,800cc air-cooled flat-four engine, driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. Routine maintenance is said to have been carried out annually by the specialists at ProRally with a major service performed in 2017, and more recently in 2021 including overhauls of the engine, gearbox, and brakes. Images of the undercarriage are provided in the gallery.
This sale will include a clean title. With its retro styling unique pickup configuration, this Type 2 double cab is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. Do not miss the chance to add this iconic Volkswagen to your collection.
