As part of a limited production run throughout 1961 and 1962, the Porsche 356B “Notchback” Coupe was among the first Porsches built by Karmann, featuring a unique bodyshell with a welded steel hardtop. This 1961 example, chassis #200270, is one of just 1,048 T5 Notchback Coupe models produced. Benefiting from a 2016 restoration by Dale Erdman, formerly of Klasse 356, it comes refinished in its factory paint color, Condor Yellow. Acquired by the seller here on PCARMARKET in July 2024, this rare 356B Notchback Coupe has since received upgrades, including an engine displacement increase to 1,720cc. Reportedly stored inside a climate-controlled facility since restoration, this example is now being offered for auction out of California.

The 356B Notchback earned its moniker from its unique bodywork, consisting of a 356B Cabriolet bodyshell with an optional steel hardtop welded in place by Karmann to create a fixed-roof Coupe. This example was previously stripped to bare metal and refinished in its original Condor Yellow (6010) shade. It rides on 15” aluminum wheels with Bridgestone tires. A matching full-size spare is mounted in the trunk, and detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is said to have been previously restored by Autobahn Interior and features black leatherette upholstery, complemented by oatmeal square-weave carpeting, and a body-colored dashboard. Accessories include a black three-spoke steering wheel, chrome handles and window rollers, rubber floor liners, door pockets, pop-out window vents, a locking glove box, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. The gauges have been rebuilt by North Hollywood Speedometer.

The previously installed replacement flat-four engine has been upgraded to displace 1,720cc, utilizing big-bore barrels and cylinders and period-correct Zenith carburetors. Additionally, the Bosch distributor was rebuilt, and the sheet metal was powder-coated. The rear wheels are driven through the original 4-speed manual transaxle. Equipment also includes stainless steel heat exchangers, a Dansk muffler, and front disc brakes. Under prior ownership, the engine tin has been powder-coated, and the car has been serviced with a new 6V Optima battery, a dual-circuit master cylinder, and a four-wheel alignment. Recent service is said to include a clutch, pressure plate, and disc replacement, an oil & filter change, a valve adjustment, and the installation of a new dual-circuit master cylinder.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This car is a pleasure to drive. It has a smooth and quiet ride. It cruises great on the freeway and handles excellently in the canyons. Karmann Notch backs are a rare find. This is a T5 and was factory-made into a coupe because of the slow sales of the convertibles.”
