Beginning life as a T5 Coupe, this 1961 Porsche 356B was reportedly converted into an open-top Speedster and raced throughout the 1970s before being purchased by the seller, refurbished, and modified for road use in 2012. Sporting its original color of Aetna Blue, the car features a 1.6-liter flat-four engine with Solex P40 PII carburetors, an MSD 6Al ignition box, a front-mounted oil cooler, a Bursch exhaust system, adjustable coilovers, 4-wheel disc brakes, a 4-speed manual transaxle, Pre-A taillights, a roll bar, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, a replica 550 Spyder rearview mirror, Tillett carbon fiber bucket seats, a 917-style shift knob, and 15” Porsche 964 space-saver wheels. Benefitting from new braided stainless-steel oil lines, a new fuel pump, spark plugs, and valve cover seals, this road-legal 356 Speedster-style race car is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Florida.

The car’s original fixed roof was removed during open-top conversion in the 1970s, and roadster front and rear cowls were added along several composite body panels. The composite front and rear clips were removed in favor of 356 Speedster clips under the seller’s ownership, and a Pre-A hood handle was installed along with Pre-A taillights, mesh headlamp covers, and a replica 550 Spyder rearview mirror and number plate lights. Refinished in its original Aetna Blue paint color, the exterior also features leather hood straps, a low-profile driver’s windscreen, a driver’s roll hoop, a louvered composite engine cover, decklid pins, and a center-exit Bursh exhaust with an aftermarket spark arrestor. The car rides on 15” Porsche 964 space-saver spare wheels with older Toyo R888 tires. The paint quality is said to reflect that of a race car; detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cockpit has been stripped out for weight savings, painted grey, and fitted with a weld-in roll cage. Accessories include fixed Tillett carbon fiber bucket seats, 5-point driver and 4-point passenger racing harnesses, a leather-wrapped Moto-Lita steering wheel, a 917-style wooden shift knob, and a replica VDO gauge set with a GPS speedometer and a digital odometer. The seller indicates there is no parking brake, and occupants must climb over the hollowed and pinned doors for access.

The 1.6-liter flat-four engine was acquired as a racing motor, although the exact details of the modifications are unknown. It has a larger oil pump, a full-flow oil system, a front-mount oil cooler, an MSD 6AL ignition box, rebuilt Solex P40 PII carburetors, and a heat-wrapped Bursch exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed Type 741 manual transaxle. The car is equipped with adjustable coilovers and 4-wheel disc brakes. Recent service includes the installation of new braided stainless-steel oil lines, a new oil filter, oil cooler, fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, valve cover seals, and an oil change.

@Champ : The windshield cowl is steel but there are no windshield mounting bosses in place.
Is the windshield cowling steel? Are the bosses in place to mount a glass speedster windshield?

@skl2 : They may be, I had them all off and may have got them mixed up. All four wheels and tires are identical.
is it just me, or are the tires mounted the wrong direction?
@craneman04 : The front and rear clips are fiberglass.
Can you please clarify whether the current front and rear clip are steel or fiberglass?
@broadwayjoe : The car runs on the highest octane pump gas. I also like to add some Boostane to each tank load.

@austin356 The car is firmly braced from the front torsion bars to the rear transmission/engine mount area. This includes parallel door bars, side to side bars under the dashboard and behind the driver connected to the roll bar. Look at the pictures of the car with the doors open, the pedal box area, behind the seats and the roll bar.

@82turboruf : A tune up, up to date harness, most likely different tires and a fuel cell. Tank is stock single wall steel.
What is needed to return it to the track (SCCA) ?
I have just uploaded pictures of the SCCA racing logbook for the car. It shows the car with its previous bodywork.
