The 356B debuted with revised styling cues and a wider range of more powerful engines featuring Porsche’s race-inspired engineering. This 1961 Porsche 356B 1600S is finished in Signal Red over a black leatherette interior. It was acquired by the seller in 2012 and subsequently underwent a restoration courtesy of Allen Johnsen Racing Service which included new paint, a refurbished interior, transmission and top-end engine work, and more. Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 356B is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Colorado.
Revisions of this model compared to the 356A included raised headlights, re-contoured and raised front and rear bumpers, and brake-cooling intakes below the front nose. This Ruetter-bodied 356 originally came finished in Signal Red (6011) and was treated to a bare metal respray in 2014, courtesy of Kustom Coachworks. During the restoration, it also received new rubber and trim from Stoddard. The seller reports that the finish remains in very good overall condition, and notes that the car has been waxed annually since it was refinished. Details include a single bullet-style mirror, body-color bumpers with chrome over riders, and a set of 15” chrome wheels with Porsche-crested hubcaps. The wheels come dressed in a set of Vredestein Sprint Classic tires bearing date codes from 2021. Additional images can be found in the gallery.
The cabin is upholstered in black leatherette and was reupholstered during its restoration by Autos International Inc. of Escondido, California. Additional refurbishments included new carpets with Dynamat lining headliner and door panels, as well as gauges restored by North Hollywood VDO. Equipment includes front lap belts, map pockets, and an upgraded 12v electrical system, VDO instrumentation, and a replacement JVC cassette stereo. The seller confirms that all gauges, electronics, and accessories remain functional.
Power comes from a 1600cc flat-four engine that sends power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. The seller notes that during the restoration, the engine's top-end and transmission were serviced by Allen Jonhsen Racing Service. Improved equipment for the 356B compared to its predecessor included new cast-aluminum Alfin brake drums with iron liners, and improved sealing to direct water away from the brakes. The seller reports that there are no outstanding service items to note at this time.
This sale will include a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: "Thanks for visiting my auction. I restored this car at my shop Allen Johnsen Racing Serv. in 2012. I and my brother have enjoyed taking it to car shows in western Colorado and eastern Utah, where it has won many awards. The car has always been stored in a climate-controlled garage. This car starts and runs very well! Thanks, A.J."

Hoping this one gets some appreciation in the closing, it looks like a very decent cad.
Hi bte3340 thanks for the great comment very much appreciated. A.J.
AJ did extensive mechanical work on my 61 B about 4 years ago and it’s still running great. The most important thing when buying a 356 is the source. AJ is a great mechanic and I would consider him a very good resource to buy from. Autos Int does super interior work. I wouldn’t very afraid of buying from Allen.

Hi wcode I do not however the paint work was handled by Kustom Coach Works a very reputable and high end VW bus restorer. I brought the car to them totally striped of all parts. Thanks for the bid A.J.
@ajrs - There are a number of pic of the repaint. Do you have pics before paint went on? Showing the raw (hopefully) metal body panels?
Hi SailorSkip, I had to go back to the Parkway video to see what you are asking. My friend who was doing the video with me is holding the phone right over the shift and dash to show instruments and steering wheel. What you here are the very positive click in of the shifts. At the end of that video we are in a circle and running fast enough to here tire squeal at the end you here my friend say Whoo! As he was hanging on also two louder clunks which was him making sure his door was closed as we stopped. I was kind of laughing. Hope this answers your questions, and thanks for the bids.A.J.
Hi AJ. In your driving video, I keep noticing several loud "clunks" when up shifting, but certainly when you're down shifting. What's going on there? Or am I just imagining the noise? Also, have you on the previous owner replaced the shock on the car?
Txs, Skip

Hi Skip , yes I have a receipt from Ray's Engines for a complete rebuild bearings .cam.lifters. pump. German P.C. heads. 12V gen. And all the other items used in a complete rebuild. This came to me from the previous owner. During my restoration while the engine and trsns were out and the engine powder coating was being done I freshend the heads as I mentioned before also the trans was rebuilt as I said before. I can't express just how well this car runs and as you see in the video starts up like no other 356 I have owned just a great little car. Thanks for your bid AJ.
Hello AJ, Do you have any historic info on engine and/or general drive train rebuild work that's been done before you bought the car? Since we don't know the accurate mileage, it could be close to 100k?? in which case the these small air-cooled engines could need lower end work. Thanks for helping.

Hi Somer yes I submitted a full file of over 200 pic that is only one of a few from 2018
The rest were taken this month 2023. The car was not driven more than 1500mi during this time and covid. Every pic well documents the car right now. Thanks AJ
@AJRS So the UTAH pix are from 2018? Are the rest of the pix current? Thanks!
Hi Somer. Yes a little confusing, I gave my brother who is a well noted artist who lives in Eastern Utah the car for promotion and car shows. It needed to be properly licensed. I returned the car back to Western Colorado in 2018 and it is licensed in Colorado now. . Thanks for the bid AJ.
Bid in the amount of $13,560
I've noticed in the photo gallery that the license plates jump from Utah to Colorado back and forth. James Bond accessory or different time photos?
Hi's Jay,
The radio is what came to me with the car it is not stock However works and sounds good! The heater boxes are in good condition and the heater valves and hoses are all installed since I don't drive this car in the wet or cold the cables are not hooked up. The only mod's to the engine are the 12V charging system and the Bursh exhaust. Thanks Again. A.J.
@AJRS Thanks Allen…….does the heater system work for fall driving? Do you have the original radio? Is the engine stock or modified?
Hi Jaybanghart.
Slide 100/131 is a view of the new master cylinder which was replaced along with new brake lines and brake cylinders and brake shoes. Thanks for viewing my add. A.J.
Hi Allen,
Can you clarify slide 100
Thanks,

A number of people have been looking at my Porsche 356 Thank You! Just a little more about me if I may. I am a 40+ year member of P.C.A. I have enjoyed every year of that time with the club and a number of my own Porsches. That enjoyment led me to starting my own independent shop which mostly focused on club racing and vintage racing Porsches founded in 1989. This is one of my personal cars and it has been a joy to own and drive over the last 10years. I hope you can see the care I have taken with this car and I hope to find it a new home with someone who will also enjoy it. Thanks A.J.
@SailorSkip Hi thanks for taking a look, The undercoating that was on the car at the time of paint was not removed and over the last 9 or so years keep up with Wurth brand rubberized underseal the closest match to the original. Yes the trans was taken apart and new syncros added. The engine had a history of rebuild so the heads were removed and the guides and stem taper along with a Serdi precision valve seat cut were preformed. This car starts and runs very well. Thank A.J.

Any info on floor pan replacements and other upgrades to high rust areas? Seems to have some rather thick underbody coating. Also, when you mention that the tranny and top end were "serviced", does that mean they were rebuilt? Very nice car..thank you.
PS: Love Grand Junction!
Welcome to my listing on 1961 Porsche 356. If I can answer any questions I will do my best try and be of help. This is a Great! car for me and now it is time for someone else with a good home to enjoy it. Thanks A.J.
