Among the third generation of the Chevrolet Impala, this 1961 Sport Coupe version showcases the iconic "bubble top" roofline. The subject a thorough restoration under prior ownership between 2022 and early 2023, it comes finished in white with red accents, complemented by color-coordinating upholstery. Powered by a 409ci V8 engine and a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, it also features a custom side-exit exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers. Acquired by the seller approximately two years ago, this Impala is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.
The 1961 Chevrolet Impala was the first of the series to be restyled on the GM B platform, featuring a boxier design than the 1958–1960 models. Also introduced that year was the Sport Coupe’s distinctive “bubbleback” or “bubble top” roofline. Factory finished in Ermine White, this Sport Coupe was refinished in 2020, featuring red accents, a side-exit exhaust, chrome bumper overriders, and re-chromed and replaced trim and headlight surrounds. It rides on chrome 18”/20” five-spoke Ridler wheels wrapped in Atlas Force tires. Additional images are available in the gallery.
Inside, occupants are greeted with redone red and white vinyl upholstery complemented with a refinished dashboard and replacement bright metal trim accents. Equipment includes power-adjustable front seats, a rear bench, a replacement two-spoke steering wheel, a replacement steering column, manual-crank windows, an AM radio, and air conditioning. The headliner and carpets were also replaced as part of the restoration. All gauges and electronics are confirmed to be in proper working order.
Beneath the hood, a 409ci V8 engine is equipped with Edelbrock valve covers, a Holley carburetor, and a chrome dual-snorkel air cleaner. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Modifications include Doug’s headers and Flowmaster FlowFX mufflers. Braking is handled by drum brakes.
