Available for auction is a large neon illuminated Texaco sign thought to be from the 1960s. The sign measures approximately 39” inches across with a depth of approximately 7” inches. The seller states the sign is believed to be from the 1960s and has received a sympathetic restoration under his ownership. The restoration included new glass and a new transformer, and the seller notes some materials from later signs were also utlized. The sign is constructed of metal with illuminated neon tubes set back surrounded by a deep lip. The sign reads “Gasoline, Motor Oil” in white neon which surrounds a green and red Texaco star logo. The seller notes some patina in the form of chipped paint and minor surface rust but overall in great working condition.
Founded in 1902 simply as the “Texas Fuel Company”, Texaco became one of the dominant global petroleum companies from the mid 1940s-1970s and was a notable sponsor of NASCAR, IndyCar, Forumla One, and even the European Touring Car Championship. Today, Texaco remains one of the leading filling station companies as well as an iconic symbol of American car culture.
