Volkswagen’s second car model after the Type 1 Beetle, the Type 2 is considered one of the predecessors of modern cargo and passenger vans. This German-built 1960 Split Window Single Cab Transporter comes finished in Dove Blue (L31) over a Grey leatherette interior and features a rare wide bed. It comes equipped with an air-cooled 1,641cc flat-four engine paired with a Freeway Flyer 4-speed manual transaxle, a 12-volt electrical system, powder-coated wheels and bumpers, and more. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This single cab Type 2 Pickup comes finished in Dove Blue (L31) with white accents and is said to have been refinished at some point under previous ownership. The finish shows minor blemishes as well as a small patch above the passenger side taillight and some corrosion on the rear passenger outrigger. The seller notes that a new replacement outrigger will accompany the vehicle. Details include a rare wide pickup bed, dual side mirrors, an under-bed storage compartment, split windshield, sliding side windows, fold-down bedsides, white powder-coated bumpers, and a set of white powder coated 15” steel wheels. The wheels come dressed in a set of Westlake SL309 tires bearing date codes from 2014. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin features a bench seat upholstered in gray leatherette with matching door panels, headliner, and trim. There is a small tear in the driver’s side door panel and minor corrosion is visible beneath the rubber floor liner. Features include sliding side windows, lap belts, an EMPI trigger shifter, a spare wheel mounted behind the seat, a two-spoke steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, and a body-color metal dashboard. The seller states that the cabin remains in good overall condition, and confirms that all gauges, electronics, and accessories remain functional.
Power comes from a rear-mounted air-cooled 1,641cc flat-four cylinder engine which has been equipped with dual Weber 34mm ICT carburetors. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed manual Freeway Flyer transaxle. The seller reports that the engine and transmission were rebuilt in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Stopping power comes from four-wheel drum brakes and the suspension has been upgraded with KYB Excel-G shocks. Additionally, the electrical system has been upgraded to 12-volt and a battery isolation switch has been installed.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: "This rare German-built wide bed single cab VW is ready for work or play! Super reliable, and in the 2 years I've owned it I've never seen a drip or leak! Stored indoors. Tires are good but dated 2014."
