Inspired by the Porsche 718 RSK Spyder race car, this road-legal replica was built by Thunder Ranch in El Cajon, California, and features a Subaru 3.6-liter flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. The car is registered in the state of Maine as a 1959 Porsche 718 RSK Spyder and was previously listed on PCARMARKET before being acquired by the seller. This handcrafted 718 RSK Spyder replica is now being offered for auction out of New York.
The composite bodywork is finished in silver and is laid over a full tubular steel frame. Features include rear and side view mirrors, a short windscreen, twin engine grilles, a driver’s headrest fairing, and modern-style LED headlights. Porsche emblems were added by the seller and the 16” Fuchs-style wheels come dressed in a set of Accelera PH1-R tires which were mounted by the previous owner about a year ago. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The driver is situated in a lightweight painted cockpit featuring adjustable bucket seats trimmed in dark blue vinyl. The seller installed a new wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and the previous owner fitted a new headrest and carpeting on the rear panel for noise suppression. Instrumentation consists of a tachometer, temperature dials, and a voltage meter.
A Subaru 3.5-liter EZ36 flat-six engine sends power to the rear wheels by way of a Mendeola 5-speed manual transaxle. A custom 9-gallon aluminum fuel tank is equipped as well as an all-aluminum Ron Davis front radiator. The car weighs approximately 1,300 lbs. with an estimated output of 350 HP and features an independent rear suspension with adjustable coilovers. The battery was replaced along with an oil change by the previous owner.
This sale will include a Maine transferable registration.

@leadfootstyle all pics are recent
Tags stay with car in Cali and I like them
They will come with car
Ty
@prmnorton1 OK thanks. Just hard to tell which pictures are recent with the old tags
Bid in the amount of $30,250
@leadfootstyle I have retitle the car, the plates do not have a correlation with a vehicle anymore. Thanks.
@nobrakes it’s a 3.6 sub motor
Is the sellers name on the current title ? Or still in old sellers name with the cali plates ?
@mentoring1 Looks like a flat 4 horizontally opposed engine to me (as are all Subaru four cylinders). What is your definition of boxer??
Would look great sitting next to mine.
Bid in the amount of $30,000
@Mentoring1 no I did not meet the reserve on bring a trailer. I knew the owner, so I bought it directly from him.
I did a few things oil change maintenance full inspection, new battery, I changed the fuel pump, but it really didn’t need anything. The car is pretty much brand new.
@burnrubr not a boxer engine... (Pic 90)
Have you added any parts, modifications or had any labor done that has not been mentioned so far? Were you the successful bidder from bringatrailer last year?
@Mentoring1 no I’ve never put the car up for sale
Are you the same owner that tried to sell it on bringatrailer last year?
congrats to the future new owner! got a great engine on her! 3.6 boxer!
@Sailorman50 the car is at the pcar facility, if you’d like to schedule a viewing, you can direct message me and we can coordinate. Thank you.
@prmnorton1 WHERE ARE YOU IN OYSTER BAY? DO YOU HAVE A STORE FRONT?
@Sailorman50 cool thanks
@prmnorton1 JUNE22,2022 BAT AUCTION ENDED FOR THIS CAR. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1966-porsche-spyder-rsx/
@badboybuses hi yes it is an amazing car. Yeah I guess you’re correct I’ve had it maybe a year or year and a half but I’ve never listed the car so I’m really not sure about any other listings, so my apologies for my ignorance there
but I’ve had the car for a good amount of time put a lot of work into it. Awesome car runs and drives great no issues. And yes, these are very rare especially with this drive train set up. I think they only made about 12 of these with this particular set up because it was almost $60,000. Thanks.
Little confused here myself as well, sharkhunter84 asI've seen this car for sale twice in the last 14 months. First on BAT on 6/22/22 and then again on 7/14/22 on Pcarmarket just as the then current owner said he would do when it didn't sell on BAT. Not sure how the current seller thinks he's owned it for several years. The car has the same Cali plates on it, with the same license bracket as well in both auctions, as well as this current auction. It's obviously had some work done on it as the steering wheel and a few other things have changed, but not sure why it appears to be be represented as not the same car and one that hasn't been for sale for several years, per owners statement. This is a very nice car and a twin to mine, other than the drive train, thats one of the 50 that were made by Thunder Ranch. Seller any clarification? Thanks in advance.
@sportscarguy3 hi I’m not the one driving in the video, No top it is a 718 Spyder, they don’t come with tops, it was built by the very well known thunder ranch, they did a limited production run of these and very few were made, they are rare, and the top spec build Was this particular motor, I’m not sure if you’re interested in purchasing the car Just making a comment but Thank you.
Very interesting Porsche. replica
The driver suggests he’s 5 foot six, not that tall, yet he appears to really extend up over the windshield quite a bit when driving wondering how that would work or feel
Also, do I understand no side curtain no windows how about a top any kind of top?
Lastly, and with all due respect to the car, the seller and the build, wondering why the Subaru motor
The idea is to build a Porsche Spyder replica, so why not source a Porsche motor and transmission add any level of horsepower, just saying, if you’re trying to build a Porsche replica, build a Porsche replica
Again, very good looking car and certainly hope it does well at the auction is my personal feelings only and I’m sure it’s a blast to drive
Good luck all
Bid in the amount of $29,000
@TubeGuy hi yes I am 5’6. Seat moves forward and backwards, I can move the seat all the way forward. I fit perfectly , at highway speeds I don’t have any issues as far as head buffeting, Ty
I assume the driver's seat will move forward? How about for a diver that is 5'7"? At freeway speeds your head gets a bit of buffeting? Any other owners of this model car care to chime in?
@sharkhunter84 all of the emblems and decals are attached to the vehicle In several different ways they can all be removed without any sign of them ever being there if desired, Ty
@sharkhunter84 hi how are you? This car has has only been for sale once and that was several years ago when I bought it from the original owner. I’ve had it for a while now and it’s never put up for sale anywhere until now, so you may have the wrong car.
There’s probably about 800 to 900 miles on the car
I’m selling the car I sent it to Pcar in New York to do the sale for me and I had the car titled in Maine and the plates have no correlation with the vehicle. I just thought they look cool.
Thanks
3) Are all the oversized crests and porsche scripts glued or actually pinned into the body?
I’ve seen this thing pop up several times now and almost bought from the PO. Much better representation here.
1) there is no odometer on this car, about how many hours/miles have been put on it since purchased from Cali?
2) Located in NY, Registered in Maine, still has Cali plates…who is the car actually registered under and who is actually selling the car at this point?
Thanks!
Bid in the amount of $28,000
@burnrubr I agree, daily driver in Cali lol, and no emissions being that’s it’s titled as a 1959! Win win lol, I will miss this one for sure, so much fun Ty!
one of the best replica around and probably 100% more reliable and powerful than the real one! great toy for Southern California!
Bid in the amount of $25,718
@ixandstones the order for the vehicle was done about eight years ago. Finishing product arrived about 2 to 3 years ago. I bought it from the original owner. There are absolutely no issues. The decorative license plate can be removed. It’s just held with the bracket there will be no holes if it’s removed. There is no odometer. There’s probably about 700 to 800 miles on the car. The car runs and drives and shifts flawlessly pretty much everything on the car is brand-new there are no outstanding issues.
What year was the car built?
Is there an odometer, what is the displayed mileage?
How is the decorative license plate mounted? Can it be removed before pickup? Will the removal leave visible holes or can it be removed without any visible holes/mount points?
Any outstanding mechanical issues?
Bid in the amount of $25,000
@Germanyjoe hi, No it’s just for show, thanks
Good morning,
there is a german license plate mounted in the rear.
Was the car ever registered in Germany?
Br. Germanyjoe
@Honzee I’m not sure, there is a large book with a bunch of diagrams/records and receipts, I think it just there top notch build, you can call the company and ask, cars very very fast
Nice car. What did Thunder Ranch do to the EZ36?
@shapeskis and it’s also registered as a Porsche 1959 718 RSK Spyder
@shapeskis well the car is actually titled as a 1959 718 RSK Spyder, so they have to go off of the title date so you’re good
Reason I am asking is that kit cars need to be 15 years or older in order to be imported into Canada
@shapeskis I’m not sure I didn’t see a date. I purchased the car from the original owner in California a couple years ago and he had just had it delivered a few months before I bought it so I would say probably about two years ago., the original contract or purchase order to build was many years ago and it took them many years to finish the product from what he told me, the total cost for the 3.6 package was about $60,000 with anywhere from a 5 to 10 year Wait, everything on the car looks and feels brand new, car rips and runs, shifts and drives flawlessly, you could take it down the highway 80 miles an hour, and it does not vibrate or shake or anything it’s really an amazing build. They really know what they’re doing over there. Overall really bad a** car.
What year was the 718 manufactured? Is there a manufacturing date on the chassis?
