This 1959 Porsche 356A Coupe was imported to Sweden in May 1959 by general agent Scania-Vabis and delivered by the dealer Frode Lund in Malmö finished from the factory in Sonderfarbe Orange. It first competed in 1959 at Roskilde Ring, Denmark, and after changing hands several times up until 1978, the car found its current owner beginning a remarkable 45-year ownerhsip. It was subject to an extensive bare-metal refurbishment between 1978 and 1982 and went on to compete in about 100 historic races in FIA Appendix K Class GTS 5 with an FIA Historic Technical Passport up until 2010. The car has been modified with Plexiglas windows, a lightweight Carrera GT-style interior, Carrera GT brakes, and an upgraded Super 90 engine producing up to 110 HP. After its racing career, this 356 underwent a meticulous restoration from 2015 to 2018 and was registered for street use in Sweden the following year. Boasting over four decades of unbroken ownership and authentic racing history, this road-ready 356A race car is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Sweden.
This Reutter-bodied Coupe was factory-finished in the special-order color of Orange (5711) and has been modified with dual mirrors, Plexiglas rear and side windows, aluminum bumper mounts, splash plates, leather hood straps, a Marchal Fantastic 662 spotlight, an external killswitch, and an auxiliary brake light at the top of the rear window. The bumper guards have been removed and a Carrera GT trim strip has been added. The car rides on 4.5” x 15” Lemmertz wheels dressed in Yokohama 185/65R15 tires. The refurbishment in 1978-1982 included the replacement of the floor pans, battery box, longitudinals, lock post, and repairing the rocker panels before the body was stripped to bare metal and resprayed in its original color. The car was refinished once again in 1998 following a minor accident.
The lightweight racing-style interior features new tan square weave carpeting and black leatherette upholstery along with Recaro 1328 bucket seats, a removable four-point roll bar, and a removable three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel. Other accessories include lightweight door panels with leather window straps, red four-point Sabelt/Sparco safety harnesses, a short shifter with an aluminum gear knob, tan rubber floor mats, and a body-colored dash fascia with analog VDO gauges. The handbrake has been relocated between the seats. All electronics, gauges, and lights are said to be working properly. The car’s true mileage is unknown.
Installed in 2018, the modified 356 1600 Super 90 engine (800821) was rebuilt and upgraded with Shasta 83.5mm pistons, re-bored cylinders, a reground and balanced crankshaft, new crank bearings, new valves and guides, and Mirra cut seats. It features a full-flow oil system with an auxiliary cooler in the left rear fender. There is also a small pulley, electric fuel pump, fuel filter, and a single-outlet exhaust in stainless steel. The rear wheels are driven through a Type 644 4-speed manual gearbox with BBBC ratio gearing. The gearbox has been rebuilt with new synchronizer rings, bearings, and a new clutch. Stopping power comes from 60mm Carrera GT drum brakes in front and 356B drum brakes in the rear, all with cooling coops in the backing plates. The braking system includes a dual master cylinder and stainless-steel braided lines. The chassis also includes a 19mm front sway bar, a 26mm rear torsion bar, adjustable shock absorbers, and refurbished ZF steering gear. The car was approved for road use by Swedish authorities in 2019 and was recently serviced with fresh fluids, carburetor and brake adjustments, and wheel alignment. The seller indicates minor oil leaks are coming from the engine and gearbox.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “A Porsche 356A coupe with 30 years on the track, now ready for the road. It isn’t a concours car, it’s an old racecar with patina, it’s a driving machine.

@A1959356D everyone forgets that! I am always a little sad to see a car on one of these sites. it is a money printing business. And then there is the Motor Vehicle Agency, the local tax, and extra transport insurance makes sense. Maybe we should start a competitor to carsandbids with commission built in to the bid, and 2% seller commission. It would still be extremely profitable.
Talking expenses, dont forget the PCarmarkets 5%
@EddieBrannon luckily for me, it is only 69 kilometers from home, so no need to use them and instead get a nice drive :)
@moezilla Yes I used West Coast Shipping for my most recent car. They are a good company.
@EddieBrannon west coast is quite good
Used them a couple of times
@MB-porsche I agree you have a very nice car and well worth shipping! I just wanted to clarify shipping cost to USA is near 10-11k using shared container at 3000 plus arrival Port fees and taxes, insurance at 2-3% of value, 2.5% customs duty, translation of title to English, shipping to European port from sellers location and from destination port to buyer. The costs add up.
@EddieBrannon Prior to the sale, the shipping for a 20-foot container was investigated.
2200 EUR, about 2400 USD. Netherlands to Miami
2815 EUR, about 3000 USD. Netherlands to LA
It includes handling, export clearance, lashing and securing, trucking to terminal, terminal handling and seafreight.
Excl. local charges at destination, import duties and/or VAT, transport insurance and customs interventions.
This is a very nice build, with all the Carrera GT DNA, and worth importing then if it costs 5-10K is a minor problem, you don't see this can of car that much with the owner's history and racing history in my mind! this thing is what it will be sold for! everything under 150K is a bargain, but this is the charm with actions,, but to build this one and get this racing history is not possible
@PRRSR Hi, actually shipping to US is closer to 11,000 USD adding all the duties port taxes etc. I just imported a 356 from the Netherlands two months ago. I bidded to several shippers and finally used Westo Coast shipping. all are similar in cost.
my silly comment was my internal wrestling with resisting all of the pound puppies at the shelter. This is a car that wants to be adopted by an owner who will treat it well, but I don't "need" another 356! If anyone knows of any support groups for people with car addiction, please let me know.
Jeg behøver ikke at adoptere denne pund hvalp

I have not written lines since third grade! but this car is giving me the eye.

This is very cool! it even beats the Emory cars with this history! This is the real deal! just amazing! The Porsche 359 1959 Carrera GT is an iconic classic car that epitomizes the design and engineering excellence of Porsche during the late 1950s./ it is buying for everybody that loves the 356 Cars! you don't see this that often comes up for sale and so tasty
@witz It is the only one in Sweden in that color, no matching number but matching color!
Very impressive video! Buy this and you will be the only one at Cars and Coffee with a orange 356. Very rare color....I know because I have one.
@A1959356D Shipping from the Netherlands to Miami costs approx. 3K + VAT, to LA approx. 1K more. This is a well-maintained competion car. In competion it's important to be able to get the maxium from the car. It's not enough to come to a race-weekend in bad condition because then you might as well stay at home, look att picture #34. In connection with the sale , the engine, gearbox, brakes and wheel-suspension have been completely renovated.
Bid in the amount of $3,560
Thank you PRRSR, I love the car......and am looking for a driver, I am getting to the age where I can not do a lot of the maintenance, so need some dependability, and this looks to be a good one. Thank you for taking good care of it. I must investigate the shipping expense.
The metal work done in the 70's fixed all rust damage. In 1998, the car was hit by an Austin Healey in a city race in Copenhagen, but it was only a minor damage in the left rear fender and then the car was repainted. There are some stone chips and paint blisters on the 24 year old paint job. The switches are for the ignition, fuel pump, horn and windshield washer pump. There is a speedometer km/h for the car.
Was mot of the metal work due to rust or racing accidents?
Is there any issue now with rust, that I should be concerned with?
What are the eextra toggle switches for?
I notice that the gauges are in MPH instead of KPH ?
