Created at the behest of American car importer Max Hoffman, the Porsche 356 Speedster, introduced in 1954, was a lightweight, minimalist version of the 356 designed for the American market, particularly for enthusiasts seeking a more visceral and sporty option. This 1958 example was completed at the factory on November 25th, 1957, and is said to have been restored during the late 1990s before the seller’s purchase in 2004. It wears its factory Ruby Red color and features a replacement 1,600cc flat-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle. Accompanied by a Kardex and an original 1958 California license plate, this 356 Speedster is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of California.
The Speedster is characterized by a low-raked windshield that can be removed for racing and features a lightweight minimalist convertible top with removable side curtain windows. This example is said to have been restored in the late 1990s and was refinished in its original Ruby Red color by Doug Franklin's Classic Auto Body of Clovis California in 2011. The black convertible top was also replaced under current ownership. Equipment includes body-colored bumpers with chrome overriders, headlamp stone guards, a chrome driver’s side mirror, gold Speedster badging, and chrome 15”x5.5” steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and Michelin tires. An additional set of 15”x4.5” painted wheels with chrome hubcaps is included as well. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The Speedster’s cockpit features a more streamlined design than a standard 356A with minimal trim and lightweight fixed-back bucket seats. The cabin of the 356 has been restored with black leatherette upholstery and grey square weave carpeting. Accessories include a black three-spoke steering wheel, lap belts, a glovebox, rubber floor mats, and analog VDO gauges.
Power is derived from a replacement 1,600cc flat-four engine derived from a 1961 Porsche 356B model. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual transaxle. The seller indicates the technicians at German Autowerks have professionally maintained the car throughout their two decades of ownership.
This sale will include a spare tire, a jack, additional wheels, a Kardex, a 1958 California license plate, and a clean title.

The very last picture is the Kardex, sorry we must have sent it in sideways. I will try to send it in again so it is easier to read.
@rlp2, can you post a photo of the Kardex?
Some of these 356s just look better than others. Not sure if it’s the paint on this one or the year but what a fantastic looking Porsche.
And I am not a huge fan of red for my cars, but this is stunning. I must say very clean. Should do well here. Good luck all.
