A member of the “ponton” family of Mercedes-Benz cars named for its pontoon-shaped bodywork, the 220 A (W180) model was launched in 1954 and succeeded by the 220 S version in 1956, featuring an upgraded 2.2-liter inline-six engine. This 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 S sedan is finished in black over a dark red leather interior. The car underwent a full restoration in the Netherlands before being imported to the U.S. in January 2025. This classic German luxury car is now being offered for auction out of New York.
This 220 S was refinished in black during the restoration. Details include chrome bumpers and body moldings, a driver’s side mirror, front driving lights, a polished clamshell exhaust tip, and black 13” wheels with matching chrome-accented hubcaps. The car rides on BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial whitewall tires. Some dings and paint imperfections are noted around the exterior. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin has been restored with dark red leather upholstery, black carpets, and a wooden dashboard with matching window surrounds, Accessories include a white two-spoke steering wheel, a column-mounted shifter, manual window cranks, heater and ventilation controls, an analog clock, and a glove compartment. The seller indicates the fuel gauge needle jumps while the car is driven.
The dual-carbureted 2.2-liter inline-six engine delivers up to 105 HP to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller indicates the engine was rebuilt and a host of restoration documents and photos are included in the sale.
This 220 S is accompanied by restoration records and photos, a spare tire, an owner’s manual, import documentation, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “We are proud to offer this beautiful 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S, recently imported and ready for a new owner. This classic example of German engineering features elegant styling and solid performance, making it a timeless collector's piece. The car is in great overall condition, with a clean body and interior that reflect its care. While not a perfect show car, it presents beautifully and is an excellent candidate for enjoying as-is or taking it to the next level. All imperfections have been thoroughly photographed to provide full transparency. This 220S is a fantastic opportunity to own a piece of automotive history. Don't miss your chance to bring this iconic classic home!”

@Zeke unfortunately we don’t have an exact date of the restoration. The car was purchased overseas and although we have documentation and photos, we never received an exact date on when the work was done. Given the photos and condition, it seems to have been done relatively recently.
I have the 1957 version of the same car. Mine is in show condition and yours is almost there, however the bidding does not come close to offsetting the cost of the mechanical and interior refurbishment How long ago was the car repainted , the engine rebuilt and the interior reapponted? Beautiful car from my past as well

@mtmA2 good morning and thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear this brought back memories. We actually have a '61 in the personal collection; you can see it in the background of the first underside photo.
I carpooled to my scuba lessons in 1969-70 in a 1961 version of this car, 4 on the tree and all. Great, reliable car in the dead of winter iin Madiosn, WI. Great memories. Will be watching this one closely.
