Built by the original Vintage Speedsters company in California, this 356A replica features handmade fiberglass bodywork paired with a 1963 Volkswagen chassis and air-cooled 2,276cc engine. It was recently treated to a fresh coat of Arctic Silver Metallic paint by the specialists at Vintage Motorcars of California along with new carpeting, exterior trim, badging, seals, and more.  This high-quality Speedster replica underwent a comprehensive recent tune-up and is now being offered for auction showing approximately 32k kilometers (just over 20k miles) on the odometer.

In July of 2022, this Speedster was completely refinished in the traditional Porsche color of Arctic Silver Metallic and adorned with new badging, trim, rubber seals, horn grilles, headlight buckets, and taillights.  Accessories include mesh headlight stone guards, clear glass turn signal lenses, a louvered rear decklid, black leather hood straps (attached with Velcro), aero-style mirrors, and a black Haartz cloth soft top with matching side curtains and tonneau cover. The car is also accompanied by a set of custom top-down CruZin windows. It rides on 10-slot Lemmerz wheels with Porsche crested hubcaps and 185/70 HR Vredestein tires from 2021.

The cabin is trimmed in high quality Allante black vinyl with new carpeting and door panels recently fitted by Vintage Motorcars of California. The footwells are lined with Coco floormats and the driver sits ahead of a genuine wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel with a Porsche-crested horn button. Other accessories include Porsche-crested lap belts, a Porsche-crested shift knob, and Porsche badging across the dashboard.

The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual 3.88 Freeway Flyer transmission paired with an air-cooled 2,276cc flat-four engine. Features include dual 44 IDF Weber carburetors as well as an external oil cooler with fan, a transmission brace, front disc brakes, rear camber compensator, adjustable front suspension, external spin-on oil filter, Bosch-style ignition, and dual-tip chrome exhaust. The seller states the engine has approximately 2k miles of use and underwent a full tune-up including rebuilt carburetors and valve adjustments in August of 2022.

This sale will include custom top-down CruZin Windows, a car cover, and a clean California title.

@DesertCDN The tune up and carb rebuild were done this month.

  • DesertCDN (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Just one point of clarification I would like. I see from the attachments, that engine work was completed in Jan 2018 by the previous owner; while the Pcarmarket summary (near the end of their text) of the vehicle mentions work that was done this month (Aug 2022) including a tune-up and carb(s) rebuild. Was this work done this month; or are they referring to the Jan 2018 engine work in error?

Today is the final day of the auction and there are only a few hours left. The serious bidding doesn't begin until the last few minutes of the auction.
Bids placed in the last 2 minutes will reset the Pcarmarket clock back to 2 minutes so any out-bid buyers have an opportunity to place a new bid. This will continue until no new bids come in during the final 2 minutes.
Here are a couple of facts to keep in mind about replica Speedsters:
    1. Every one of the more than 100 replica Speedsters I've had in the past 10 years is worth more now than I sold them for! Just like original Porsche Speedsters, they keep appreciating and are an investment if you take good care of them. Drive them for a few years and then sell them for more than you paid!
    2. To replace this Speedster will require a build time of 2 years, BUT THIS ONE CAN BE IN YOUR GARAGE NEXT WEEK!
I'll continue to answer any questions right up to the end. Thank you for your bids and good luck.

@DesertCDN Yes, these cars need to warm up for a minute or so before being driven. I always use that minute or so to go over the car with a California Duster and a microfiber cloth with some detail spray to get off the bug splats before I drive off.

@replicaspeedster.com Thanks for your post Troy. And I get it about the choke; I had one of these years ago that I had to sell - but I am looking to get back into one now that I have room for it.

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@DesertCDN Thanks for the question. In the drive video, if you notice, I wasn't sitting in the car with my foot on the gas when I turned the key, so I asked Sally to do it from the passenger side, but she didn't hold the key over until it actually started and it didn't start. I asked her to do it again while I tended the throttle at the linkage and it started a bit rough for just a second but then ran fine. I could have just started the video over, but didn't really think it was a big deal and it's not.
The car starts and runs fine, just like in the other video, but these cars do not have a choke and typically need to be babied for a bit when first started.
There is nothing wrong with the brand new headlights as you can see in the other photos. I normally, just turn on the parking lights, but when I got to the front of the car I noticed that the driver's side parking light was not on so I turned on the headlights for the rest of the photos. Turned out that the bulb just wasn't seated in the socket and it's fine now. Thanks again for the question and for the comments about my CruZin windows.

Without any doubt, as a previous Speedster owner, I can say that those cruZin window inserts are very cool. A couple of questions: I wanted to ask about one of the two videos where the car is started; was there a problem with a cold start in the cruise video? And in the first photo at the gas station, it appears that only one headlight was functioning; is there a problem with them?

@replicaspeedster.com Thanks so much. I’ll check it out!!
    Very professional!!

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@richjs43 Yes Petronics electronic ignition. The CruZin Windows attach the same way the regular sidecurtains attach. They have posts that fit in the grommets on the door top rails. I make the CruZin Windows and have a website that shows all the details, but I'm not allowed to post a link. Do a search!

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@replicaspeedster.com: sorry, I see that the engine was rebuilt in 2018, so I assume the 2k miles since….please provide info on CruZin window installation. the engine receipt shows Petronix ignition, correct???
thanks again, great info and videos by the way

@replicaspeedster.com: Hello Troy, awesome replica….would you please clarify info on engine…car has 20K miles on it , you state that the engine has 2k miles of miles of use. How are the cruzin windows attached and can they be removed….thank you

@DesertCDN You're correct it was "great work" that was done, because it was done by Vintage Motorcars of California. I kept it the same color, Arctic Silver and I'm sorry, but I don't have any information about when it was originally built.
    Thank you for the question.

  • DesertCDN (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Looks like some great work has been done on the vehicle. What color was the vehicle previously; and do you know what year the original build was?

@NYSport You're absolutely correct! They are tear drop taillights and I have no idea why I said bee hives, I know the difference. Thanks for pointing it out.

Very nice replica 356. The walk around video states "bee hive" tail lights, they are not. GLWA

Hello, my name is Troy, welcome to my replica Porsche Speedster auction. Many of you know that I have sold several Speedsters on Pcarmarket in the past (it's my hobby) and they have all been extremely high quality cars: This one is a beauty with a 2276cc engine and it can be in your garage this month!
This car has far too many upgrades to be listed in the ad,
Good luck and I'll look forward to answering all of you questions.
