Completed in 2014, this 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster replica was commissioned by its original owner from Carrera CoachWerks of El Cajon, California. Based on a 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the chassis was reconfigured with steel tubing and a box frame to accommodate the upgraded 2.5L Subaru flat-four engine. It was acquired by its second and current owner in 2021 and treated to considerable maintenance including replacement of the steering gear, ignition wires, coils, spark plugs, and brake fluid. This high-quality 356 replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with just over 4k miles shown on the odometer.
The fiberglass bodywork comes finished in Antique White and features dual side mirrors, beehive taillights, painted bumpers, gold Speedster badging, and a red partial tonneau cover. Polished 15” steel wheels were mounted with new Toyo Proxes tires about two years ago and the finish is described to have been kept in excellent overall condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is lined with red square weave carpeting and vinyl upholstery with matching diamond-stitched leather bucket seats. Accessories include a three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, aluminum shift knob, picnic basket set, all-weather floor mats, and a suite of classic analog gauges with green markings.
Power is sent to the rear wheels from a 2.5L Subaru EJ25 flat-four engine paired with a Transworks 4-speed manual gearbox. Maintenance in August of 2021 included parking brake adjustment, fuse box service, ball joint lubrication, door latch adjustment, wheel alignment, and a brake fluid flush as well as replacement of the brake hoses, steering gear, and horn wire. More recently in March of 2022, the ignition wires, coils, and spark plugs were replaced along with the fuel tank sending unit. An oil and filter change was also carried out in July of 2022.
This sale will include some records and a clean title.

@CardiffClassics c9c Yes, they are both accurate, the problem was the video sound was not picking up the engine sound consistently during the video which made it appear that the gauges were both reading high. They are both very accurate
Thanks

Are the Speedo and Tach accurate? Both seemed to be running pretty high in the driving video? thanks @CardiffClassics

@cmcb4 The owner told me he requested the change during the build process because he preferred them the way they are configured currently. Thanks
Curious why original build order sheet shows 4 wheel disc and e-brake under dash. Pics appear to show, front disc only and e-brake between seats.

@joylove It is registered as a 1974 Volkswagen
In California and has been since it was built. it is exempt from Smog. Thanks
Hi, how is the car registered and can it pass CA smog?
@Flyman sorry for the delayed response, yes all you mentioned is correct, but it does have a Tonneau.
Can I assume there is no convertible top, side curtains or tonneau cover? Also, there's no mention of a heater and/or radio. Is this correct? THANKS!
