One of Porsche’s most iconic automobiles, the 356A Speedster was launched in 1955 at the behest of famed American car importer Max Hoffman. It was intended as an open-top driver’s car with a minimal lightweight design and a distinctive low-profile silhouette. This 1957 example is one of 3,676 examples produced in total and recently completed a 4-year restoration. It comes finished in Black over a tan leather interior and features a rebuilt engine upgraded to 1,720cc including LN Engineering cams, 86mm JE pistons, and Wilhoit heads. The car has also been enhanced with a dual-stage master brake cylinder, new Koni shocks, and a front sway bar. This fully restored 356A Speedster is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois.

The Speedster was created by Porsche using the steel body of the 356A Cabriolet stripped of its trimmings and equipped with a lower-raked windscreen which was easily removable for racing.  The glass side windows were also removed in favor of roll-up curtains. The restoration of this Speedster was carried out by Posemato’s Bodyworks & Restorations of Gurnee, Illinois, and included a new battery box, floor pans, and longitudinal members. The car was refinished in two-stage Black paint and equipped with a new tan convertible top and a matching tonneau cover. It rides on 4.5”x15” chrome wheels dressed in vintage-style Pirelli CN36 tires. The seller adds that the brightwork, lights, and badging remain in excellent condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, this Speedster features a pair of reupholstered tan leather bucket seats with matching dashboard and door panels. The cabin is lined with beige German square weave carpeting and includes a factory deluxe two-spoke steering wheel, rebuilt original gauges, and custom two-tone Coco floor mats.

Power comes from a rebuilt air-cooled flat-four engine (#62349) featuring a 1,720cc displacement with 86mm JE pistons, a DPR counterweight crankshaft, LN Engineering cams, and Wilhoit heads & valves. The rear wheels are driven through a rebuilt Type 741 4-speed manual transmission with a BBAB gear ratio. The chassis also includes new Koni shock absorbers, a front sway bar, and overhauled brakes with a new dual-stage master cylinder.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, some documentation, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know:  "This car was a 4-year restoration by Posemato, one of the best 356 restorers in the business. You can see by the bare metal pictures the attention to detail. The Diamont base coat/clear coat paint is spectacular. The engine is a very strong performer at approximately 115 hp. The car is a "head turner" at the Concours or on the street. "

@cwsconsulting thanks for the reply. Are there records of it being on the jig? And anything that indicates how far off line the chassis was to begin with and the specs it was returned to?

Hi too_fast Here is the history of the speedster. The car was owned by either a student or faculty member of Northwestern University in Evanston Ill. There is a parking pass on the old windshield dated 1967. From there it was sold to an owner in Missouri It had some rust and somewhere along it's history it had been a vintage racer like alot of the speedsters in the day. The rear end damage came from the racing. It was stored by the Missouri owner until the current owner purchased in 2013. The restoration was started in 2018. The car was dipped andl striped to bare metal. It was put on a chassis jig measured to exact Porsche specifications. The floor and battery box area were replaced. The rear clip was replaced becase of the race damage. Look at the bare metal pictures of the car It was completely rebuilt to factory specs. The car was then primered and painted to Porsche specs. The underneath was sprayed with Wurth products for protection. The steering wheel was painted to match knobs and interior. The whole restoration is brand new, less than 200 miles. cws consulting

What was the reason for replacement of the floor, battery box, and rear clip? If it was due to corrosion, was there any other preventative maintenance to deter against future corrosion? If it was due to a past accident, is there any info regarding other related repairs (i.e. anything indicating damage to frame or other structural components)? Thx in advance
