In March 1956, the Mercedes-Benz 220a was succeeded by the 220S, featuring an upgraded 2.2-liter inline-six engine with twin carburetors and exterior refinements while maintaining the iconic "Ponton" design. This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 220S Sedan, built for the European market, was previously refinished in grey over red leather upholstery. Acquired by the seller in 1990, recent service since January 2023 included a brake overhaul, fuel system flush, and refinishing of the trunk, upper dashboard, and wood interior trim. Imported from Germany to the United States, this W180 is now offered for auction out of Washington.

The W180 "Ponton" models featured round, continuous body lines with integrated fenders and a unit-body chassis, marking a key innovation in 1950s automotive engineering. This example was refinished in its current shade of grey under previous ownership, complemented with a chrome hood ornament, driver’s side mirror, window trim, and bumpers. It rides on 13” steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and Kumho Power Star 758 tires. The seller notes a small crack on the passenger's side fender, and detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features two rows of red leather-upholstered bench seats, complemented by color-coordinated door panels and woven floor mats. Amenities include a dash-mounted analog clock, a Blaupunkt radio, a heater, and curtain rails. The seller notes that the wooden upper dashboard and trim were refinished, and the trunk was coated with a spray-on bedliner in 2023. The lower dashboard shows wear, the floor covering in the driver’s footwell is torn, and a button is missing from the radio.

Power comes from a 2.2-liter M180 inline-six engine with dual Solex carburetors and a column-shifted 4-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The suspension includes a double-wishbone front, single-joint rear swing axle, and coil springs. Power-assisted drum brakes are fitted at all four corners. In January 2023, service included a fuel system flush, fuel filter replacement, and brake overhaul with a new master cylinder, three-wheel cylinders, and lines. Chassis number 180010750013 is noted, though the VIN on the Washington title excludes the "180010" prefix. The seller notes corrosion on some underside components.

This sale will include a clean title, service manuals, some service records, an uninstalled wooden dashboard piece, and a collection of spare parts.

The seller would like you to know: "This stunning European market Mercedes-Benz 220S Sedan has been owned for 34 years and has been garage-kept since 1990. It's been well-maintained and carefully sorted during this time, preserving this timeless classic. With a luxurious interior and smooth ride, this 220S is perfect for both collectors and enthusiasts!"

Drove a German Ford when I lived in in Deutschland, also 4 Speed on the column. Imagine how unique this car was cruizing around all the Big finned US cars of that era. Very cool car.

@Yags yes interesting indeed. Although Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC was founded in 1965, importation of Mercedes-Benz vehicles actually began in 1952 under Max Hoffman. The radio is there as visual reminder of an era long ago however included in the sale is a replacement factory clock that would be best suited to be replaced when or if the refinished and additional dash is utilized.

For a Euro car it’s interesting to see the Speedometer in MPH along with other English markings. Does the radio and clock work?
