Making its debut as an upscale personal luxury vehicle in 1954, the original Ford Thunderbird is an icon of retro American design. This 1957 example is among over 21,000 Thunderbirds produced that year, and one of only 1,499 equipped with the coveted "E-Code" 312ci Y-block V8 engine option. Notably, it appeared on the cover of the Early Bird (September – October 2022 Edition), the official publication of the Classic Thunderbird Club International. Extensively restored, it boasts a red exterior with a matching red interior, complemented by a white soft top. Additional features include chrome bumpers, dual side mirrors, power windows, an analog clock, a heater, and an AM radio. This Thunderbird is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
The 1957 model year featured a larger front bumper for the Thunderbird as well as enlarged tailfins and grille for improved aerodynamics, larger rear taillights, and "Thunderbird" script relocated to the front fenders. This example underwent a complete restoration in 2000, which included refinishing the hood, trunk, doors, and fenders in red. It features a white soft top, chromed front and rear bumpers, rear fender skirts, slanted tail fins, bumper-mounted auxiliary parking lights, and a fixed antenna. It rides on 14” Kelsey Hayes wire wheels wrapped in Coke Classic white wall tires with less than 5k miles. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin showcases a bench seat upholstered in red and white vinyl, complemented by matching door panels and carpets. Amenities include lap belts, a heater, an AM radio, an analog clock, a floor-mounted shifter, and a customized, removable armrest with a cup holder. It also features power windows, reportedly one of only 500 factory-produced units with this option. All gauges and electronics are confirmed to be in proper working order.
Power comes from an E-Code 312ci Y-block V8 featuring dual 4-barrel carburetors, which delivers a factory-rated 272 HP and 338 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic. The seller notes that the engine and transmission were fully rebuilt in 2018.
This sale will include a window sticker, a spare tire, a copy of the Early Bird magazine featuring the car, and a clean title.
