A brilliant recreation of one of the most iconic Porsche racing cars of all time, this replica pays tribute to the famous “Red Tail” 550 Spyder driven to victory by Hans Herrmann at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. It was reportedly built by Vintage Motorcars of California over 20 years and was acquired by the seller from a previous owner in Arizona. The car has since been completely redone and features a historic Fletcher/Telefunken livery as well as four-wheel disc brakes, alloy racing seats, and a 2360cc engine built by C&G of California. This custom 550 Spyder replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.
The replica fiberglass bodywork is finished in traditional Silver Metallic and wears the #55 Fletcher/Telefunken livery from the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. Accessories include leather decklid straps, twin engine grilles, a hood-mounted fuel filler, a driver’s headrest fairing, a central exhaust outlet, and a low-profile Plexiglas windscreen. The car rides on OEM “Wide 5” wheels with faux drum brake covers. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The bare metal cockpit includes a pair of alloy bucket seats, lap belts, a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, drilled pedal covers, and period-style VDO gauges.
Power comes from an air-cooled 2,360cc flat-four engine with electronic ignition and Weber carburetors featuring competition velocity stacks. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual transmission and stopping power comes from disc brakes at each corner. The seller states a 12-volt electrical system has been installed, routine oil and brake fluid changes have been observed, and a new battery was installed in September 2022.
This sale will include the title for a 1956 Porsche as well as a car cover and an extra pair of fiberglass seats with OEM-style upholstery.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I have owned this example for over 20 years. Stored in an indoor heated garage and covered. It was used in a movie at Watkins Glen racetrack. This is in excellent condition, as real as you can get to the real thing- all details show!”

I wanted to say I own a 1987 Beck, that I have spent a lot of money and time to make it look as close to an original as possible, and it’s a fantastic little car. However, it doesn’t come close to how well done this car is. The current and hopefully new owner should be very proud of this beauty. If I didn’t already own one I would be buying this one today regardless of the price. GLWA
