Available for auction is this 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster Super Widebody replica finished in Jaguar Grey over a Saddle Brown leather interior. Created by JPS Motorsports of San Marcos California in 2017, this Speedster is built upon a 1974 Volkswagen chassis and features a rebuilt 2.5L Subaru engine, 17" Fuchs style wheels, rare Super Widebody fenders, and a host of custom accessories.  This professionally built Speedster replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California showing just under 12k miles on the odometer.

The hand-laid steel-reinforced fiberglass bodywork is finished in Jaguar Grey with a brown retractable soft top and flared Super Widebody fenders. Other features include Porsche/Speedster emblems, Porsche crested center caps, Lexan full view side curtains, chrome front and rear nerf bars, dual aero mirrors, and dual exhaust tips. A chrome luggage rack at the rear comes fitted with vintage cross country skis, bamboo poles, a traveler's suitcase, and leather straps. This 356 rides on custom 17" Fuchs-style wheels measuring 10” wide in the rear and 8” wide in front, dressed in a set of Nexen tires.

The cabin is equipped with Speedster-style bucket seats trimmed Saddle Brown leather with a matching dashboard and door panels. Other details include a Nardi-style steering wheel with a Porsche crested horn button, a wooden shift knob, cup holders, Coco floor mats, Speedster dashboard lettering, and a stereo system with a CD player and Bluetooth receiver mounted beneath the dashboard. The seller reports all gauges and accessories to be working properly.

The water-cooled Subaru EJ 2.5L four-cylinder boxer engine was built by Outfront Motorsports and is said to produce up to 180 HP, driving the rear wheels way of a Rancho 4-speed manual transmission. The car uses an adjustable suspension with a stabilizer bar in front along with an independent setup in the rear. Stopping power comes from disc brakes at all corners. A Mobile 1 oil and filter service was performed in October of 2021.

This sale will include a clean title (California black/yellow plate not included). Perhaps the only Subaru-powered Super Widebody Speedster on the road, this incredibly unique 356 replica awaits its next owner.

@croy56 You may also be thinking of a Silver Widebody Speedster that sold here a few weeks ago. It was a Widebody, NOT a Super Widebody and there is a significant difference!

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@croy56 There was a nice Blue Super Widebody with a VW engine that sold last week, but not this one.

  • croy56 (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

I thought this sold last week

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Today is the final day of the auction and there are only a few hours left. The serious bidding doesn't begin until the last few minutes of the auction.
Bids placed in the last 2 minutes will reset the Pcarmarket clock back to 2 minutes so any out-bid buyers have an opportunity to place a new bid. This will continue until no new bids come in during the final 2 minutes.
Remember, this is the only Super Widebody Speedster in the world with a Subaru engine. To replace this car will require a build time of at least 18 months, BUT THIS ONE CAN BE IN YOUR GARAGE NEXT WEEK!
I'll continue to answer any questions right up to the end. Thank you for your bids and good luck.

    @gruvexotics No, I don't have a video, it's not a powered retractable top.
It's a very simple process to put it up or down. There are two levers where the top frame mounts to the body. They are tensioning levers that you want in the down position while the top is being put up. I then snap a couple of the back snaps and then I sit in the car and pull the top bow overhead and attach the two front clips to the windshield frame. Then I get out and snap the rest of the snaps. Once that is completed, I place the two tensioning levers in the up position to take the slack out of the top.
It's not uncommon that you will see pictures of Speedsters with a top that looks like it doesn't fit snuggly. That's usually because the owner wasn't aware of what the two levers were for.
    Thanks for the question.

*If you didn't have a chance to read the full details about the car on my website, here they are.*

This Speedster has only been driven a little over 11,600 miles since it was built. This Speedster Super Widebody replica comes with a stunning Jaguar Grey paint job, which is in near flawless condition! The interior, top and Lexan "full view"side curtains are all in excellent, like new condition. The rare, custom made 17" Fuchs style wheels with Porsche crested hubs, 10" on the rear and 8" on the front, will carry you anywhere you want to go in style.
This incredible Speedster is built on a 1974 VW pan and has a clean title as a 1974 VW. It is exempt from smog certification requirements in California and most other states. The Porsche crest on the hood, the Porsche script on the rear, the Porsche script on the dash, the USA and Germany badges on the engine grill, and the luggage rack with period correct vintage suitcase, cross country skis and bamboo poles add the finishing touches.
When comparing this Speedster with Speedsters from other manufacturers, pay very close attention to the quality of the build. Check that the doors, hood and trunk all fit smoothly and are aligned properly, with no gaps.
The engine is a 180hp Subaru EJ2.5 Liter built by Outfront Motorsports. It has a dual tip exhaust and is mated to a Rancho built 4 speed manual transmission.
This Speedster has a clean 1974 VW title and is in excellent condition:
    Jaguar Grey exterior
Saddle Brown leather original style Speedster bucket seats, door panels and dash trim
    Brown top

(perfect for cruising those country roads and powering through the twisties)

    Rear disc brakes
    Custom made 17" Fuchs style wheels ( 10" rear & 8" front)
    Adjustable front suspension

@Samwvu Yes, I had a Porsche 356 coupe that I fit in with plenty of room and I'm 6'. I think 6'5" would be pushing the limits. Additionally, there are minor modifications that can easily be made to allow for even more head room. One is to place a few washers under the two front seat mounting bolts. This will tilt the seat back slightly to increase headroom. Another, is to remove the seat adjustment tracks and mount the seat directly to the floor pan. That gives even more room, but you obviously lose the ability to adjust the seat.
    Thanks for the question.

Wondering how well someone that is 6’3” fits with top up. Should I assume the space is comparable to normal bodied 356 convertible designs.

Looks like a VW fuel tank to me. I'll have to get underneath it to see what the lines are made of and yes, there is fuse panel.

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Thank you for the question. In one of the earlier comments I mentioned that all of the details I have on the car are listed on my website www.replicaspeedsters.com. Just go to my website and click on the photos of the car. I didn't commission the build, so I don't have all of the specific details, but I'll do my best to answer your questions.
The majority of these cars are built on a modified VW pan. The original VW body is removed and the pan is shortened by 10 inches. The pan is completely reconditioned with new components. In this case, all 4 drum brakes were removed and replaced with disc brakes, not just the front like many Speedsters. There are many different disc brake kits available from companies like CIP and SoCal Imports, but I don't know which ones were used on this car. Spindles, master cylinder, brake lines, IRS, shocks ect. were all new at the time the car was built 11,600 miles ago.
The engine was completely rebuilt by Outfront Motorsports in Buena Park, California prior to being installed in the car 11,600 miles ago. The transmission was rebuilt by Rancho just prior to being installed in the car.
There is no history or visual evidence of the car ever being in an accident and it maintains the original 1974 VW title which is clear.
The radiator is located under the nose of the car and the car has no over heating problems. I don't know what was used or how the lines were installed.
I understand that you would like to inspect the car "before closing" and you are more than welcome to do so if you don't mind traveling to Fresno, prior to bidding on the car.
It's my understanding that you will need to become a registered bidder before you can bid and when you become a registered bidder you have a contract and there are some contract details involved that you should discuss with Pcarmarket. I know that the Pcarmarket 5% commission is immediately withdrawn from the winning bidder's credit card at the end of the auction, but I don't know all the specifics, so talk to Pcarmarket before you become a registered bidder.
I would like to also point out that this is not the first car I've sold on an auction site and I understand that buyers need to feel comfortable about who they are buying a car from.
I have a long history of selling Porsche Speedster replicas and have had more than 100 of them over the years, it's my hobby and they are all that I do!
Most of them can be seen on my Youtube channel and my website and you can see that I have always gone out of my way to provide the accurate information that buyers need to feel comfortable.
As an example, I almost always do a 20 minute drive video through the Fresno county foothills, who else does that? Additionally, I have phone conversations several times a week with potential buyers and help them understand the differences between the different builders out there and potential registration issues they may encounter.

Can you direct me to the mechanical description of the vehicle? If that does not exist: I would like to know what chassis was used, what hubs, brake calipers/disk/master cylinder, steering box, shocks etc? How many miles on the motor, chassis, combination? Any record confirming no history of accidents on the original chassis? What is the gas tank out of? What were the lines made of? Is there a fuse panel/kit used to wire the vehicle? The original Subaru was a water-cooled engine, where is the radiator located, what was used and how are the lines installed? What period of time does winning bidder have to inspect before closing to verify the vehicle is what was presented?

No, the windows are not roll up like you would find on a Convertible D. They have two pins that attach to grommets on the door header.
