Paying tribute to one of Porsche’s most renowned and historic race cars, this 550 Spyder replica was built in 1989 by Chuck Beck for the previous owner, Bob Tomlinson, founder of CB Performance in California. With a claimed 10.5 second quarter mile time at 138 MPH, this example was showcased on the February 1994 cover of Auto Week boasting an estimated 275 HP output from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A powerful tribute to one of Porsche’s most legendary designs, this custom 550 Spyder replica is now being offered for auction out of Indiana.
Hand-laid over a tubular steel chassis, the fiberglass bodywork is finished in Silver Metallic with gold Porsche lettering and Spyder badges. Equipment includes an aerodynamic driver-side mirror, leather bonnet straps, twin-engine grilles, and a central hood-mounted fuel filler. The 15” stock slotted steel wheels come dressed in 2-year-old Yokohama tires. A set of Porsche hubcaps are also included in the sale. The seller notes a line is present in the paint on the rear clamshell.
The cockpit is lined with grey square weave carpeting and features red leather upholstery on the bucket seats. Accessories include an ivory-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, lap belts, an ivory gear knob, Coco floor mats, and classic 356-style instrumentation with green markings and silver-capped pivot pins.
This 550 Spyder replica is powered by a hand-built Volkswagen 1955cc Gen-4 EFI turbocharged engine said to produce up to 275 HP. The rear wheels are driven by way of a ZF 4-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential while stopping power is derived from 4-wheel disc brakes. The seller reports an oil change has been recently completed.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: "This is a very special car with a great story and history. This is the fastest 550 Spyder ever produced and it has been a joy to own and drive I wish all the best to the bidders, This is a once-in-a-lifetime car I don't think another will ever be built to this spec..."

@ricm Ca may be very difficult to get this registered!
@2mAn the title says
Year
1955
If this registered as a 1955 Porsche there is no smog whatsoever ...
@ricm not sure about that I’m in Indiana
Will this pass Calif smog?
This was THE Spyder to beat all through the 1990s in our industry. I watched Pat (Downs) blow the doors off of everything else notable at the time (Storming' Norman and his Cobra were the high mark of that day). This was the first Spyder I ever rode in at 15 years old, and 30+ years later I later I was fortunate enough to work on it and drive it. Talk about full circle... The current owner is local to us here at the Beck factory and has joined our caravans to a few local car shows. It has always performed flawlessly and is a huge hit everywhere it goes...
-Carey @ Beck
@JJW007 It ran mid 10s at Run n Gun, documented in several of the specialty car magazines at the time. I recall Pat turning a 9.90 at one point, but that is a 30 year old memory told many times over beers and those tend to get faster as time goes on...
-Carey @ Beck
