Up for auction is this 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder replica by Beck. Consisting of handcrafted fiberglass bodywork over a steel tubular frame, this high-quality representation of Porsche’s iconic 550 Spyder weighs in at approximately 1300lbs while boasting a powerful CB Performance 2,165cc flat-four engine mated to a 4-speed manual transaxle. Completed by Beck in 2003, this 550 Spyder was purchased by its third and current owner in 2019 shortly before undergoing some noteworthy service items including a full rebuild of the gearbox. Now showing approximately 14k kilometers (8700 miles) on the odometer, this beautifully executed 550 Spyder replica is being offered by its seller in California on a bill of sale, accompanied by a copy of the original title and vintage 1955 year of manufacture plates.
The Metallic Silver-Blue finish on this Spyder is reported to be very well-presented with the exception of a small blemish on the lower driver’s side door and a chip below the driver’s side taillight (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). A lightweight plexiglass windscreen has been installed, although the original glass unit will also be included with the sale. Wide Five wheels are currently installed which come dressed in period-style Vredestein Sprint Classic tires sized 158/15.
The cabin of this Spyder is upholstered in red leather with red carpeting. Racing lap belts are installed along with a wooden Nardi steering wheel and push-to-start ignition. Instrumentation is in kilometers and the seller confirms all gauges to be working properly.
Power is derived from a custom built 2,165cc CB performance flat-four engine based off a Volkswagen design. Approximately 165 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission which provides for a thrilling and visceral driving experience, especially when considering the extremely low weight of 1300lbs. Performance features include a powder-coated Sebring exhaust, an external oil cooler, electric fuel pump, 4-wheel disc brakes and Weber carburetors. A comprehensive refresh was performed at Beck upon the second owner’s purchase in 2011. More recently in 2019, the gearbox was fully rebuilt by TRE Motorsports and a major service was performed which included oil and filter changes as well as a transaxle fluid change. This 550 Spyder is said to be in excellent running order.
This sale will include 1 master key, paperwork from Beck, service records dating back to 2011, original 1955 year of manufacture plates, a soft top, leather cabin cover, the original glass windshield and a copy of the original Illinois title denoting this Spyder as a 1955 Porsche. If you have always admired the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder, this stunning Beck replica offers an excellent opportunity.

@prancinghorse I sent you my cell number. You’re welcome to come see/test drive the car before auction close!
Don't you just love predictive text! What came out was "Bid with experience." What I meant to write was "Bid with confidence!" As I said I know the seller personally and have purchased two classics from him. Both were delivered as described and near flawless.
@dannyjl thanks! Hope the 930 is running strong! Love that car!
I know the seller personally. He's a fellow PCA member and takes exceptionally great care of his cars. Bid with experience.
@Jussi No, the car does not have any damage or accident history. I brought it into the shop this week for a tune up in preparation for the sale. Oil changed, accelerator cable replaced, and carburetor linkage adjusted. I asked them to also inspect tires, brakes, battery, etc... to which were all reported to be in excellent working order. The car runs perfectly - transmission is tight and pulls very strong. I had the gear box rebuilt by TRE Motorsports in March at a cost of $4000 (see photo 120).
Does it have any damage? Is it accident-free? How are the brakes and tires? How are the gear and the clutches? Free from play and wear?
Attention potential California bidders: I received a call from the DMV special processing unit this morning and they finally issued a sequence number for the car. This is necessary for the smog exemption status at the California BAR station. Everything was delayed/backed up due to COVID so this is very good news! If you don’t live in California you can ignore this message.
@AndyL215 It has always been parked in a climate controlled garage here in Los Angeles and prior to my acquisition it resided in Chicago, IL.
Was this car kept near the ocean ? It looks like surface rust around the exhaust and other areas of the motor.
