Available for auction is a 1/8 scale model of the famous 1953 Ferrari 500 F2. The seller states this is an aluminum model of the legendary Ferrari made by a well-known Modenese craftsman. The stunning model is displayed in a special box with an informational plaque.
With Alfa Romeo's departure from Grand Prix racing looming, Formula 1 faced a potential shortage of participants in 1952. To bridge the gap, the sport's governing body opted to conduct the World Championship under Formula 2 regulations. The smaller and more affordable single-seaters in the Formula 2 category held greater market appeal, attracting a larger number of specialized manufacturers.
Competing against formidable opponents like HWM, Gordini, Maserati, Cooper, and Connaught, Scuderia Ferrari made a strong start to the season, with Piero Taruffi clinching victory in the first of eight World Championship rounds. Upon returning to Europe, Ferrari's lead driver Alberto Ascari swept all six remaining rounds. Unsurprisingly, Ascari claimed the World Champion title at the end of the year, with his teammates Giuseppe 'Nino' Farina and Taruffi following closely in the standings. Despite having a full year for the competition to catch up with Ferrari's 500 F2, the team's dominance continued in 1953, albeit with Ascari winning "only" five out of the nine rounds.
Above all, the 500 F2 will be remembered as the car that brought Ferrari its first-ever World Championship. With victories in all but one of the European rounds in 1952 and 1953, it remains one of the most successful Grand Prix cars ever constructed.
