Following the MG TC, the TD introduced advancements like independent front suspension with coil springs, rack-and-pinion steering, and a left-hand drive setup tailored for the American market. Purchased initially through Fergus Motors of New York City in 1950, this MG TD has remained in the seller's family since 1979. Refurbished in the late 1980s, it received a silver and green repaint and a rebuilt 1,250cc XPAG inline-four engine. Recent work in 2021 included re-trimming the split bench seat in tan upholstery, refurbishing the dual SU carburetors, valve adjustments, and a tune-up. It comes equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission and features headlamp stone guards, Lucas driving lights, Brooklands-style windscreens, and more. This well-maintained TD is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This example is refinished in silver and green as part of its refurbishment in the late 1980s. It features Lucas driving lights mounted on a badge bar at the front and complemented by headlamp stone guards, a louvered hood, chrome bumpers with overriders, and a luggage rack. It rolls on 15″ steel wheels adorned with MG-branded hubcaps and wrapped in BFGoodrich Silvertown radial tires. A spare wheel and tire, protected by a tan cover, are fixed to the car's rear. The exterior is noted to have cracks, chips, and gouge to the paint, along with tarnished chrome. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The interior features a split bench seat that was re-trimmed in tan upholstery in 2021. It includes Brooklands-style windscreens positioned behind the folding windshield and wind wings on either side. It has a three-spoke banjo-style steering wheel, an inset clock, centrally positioned gauges, and Jaeger instrumentation. In addition, there is a rearview mirror affixed atop the dash, and the door panels are adorned with map pockets.
Power comes from a 1,250cc XPAG inline-four equipped with dual SU carburetors and delivers a factory-rated 54 HP to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The engine underwent a rebuild in the 1980s, and recent work in 2021 included refurbishing the carburetors, valve adjustment, and a tune-up. It features independent front suspension with coil springs, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel drum brakes to facilitate braking power.
This sale will include service records, spare parts, a removable soft top, a tonneau cover, side windows, and a clean title.
