This 1933 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan is the subject of a chapter in Tom Cotter’s The Cobra in the Barn coauthored with Tom Miller. Belonging to a close friend’s uncle, the car was known to Miller since the age of 13 and it had remained parked in the same family’s garage from 1963 until Miller’s rediscovery in 2003. It was found to be preserved in highly original condition and was then sold to a Ford Motor Company engineer with plans to create a street rod whose project never came to fruition. This Model A was eventually acquired by renowned hot-rodder Paul Gommi who commenced a restoration project of his own which preserved the car’s natural patina while incorporating various NOS parts and period accessories to preserve its authenticity. It features a custom supercharged flathead V8 engine, a ’39 Ford gearbox, a rebuilt front end, late Ford rear axles, rebuilt Lincoln brakes, and an extremely sought-after Dunsford toolbox with its original sticker. Maintaining the appearance of a barn find while offering upgraded power and drivability, this Model A Tudor is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

This Model A wears factory sheet metal bodywork with a patinaed original finish. The front axle was lowered 4” to achieve a nose-down stance and the car rides on 1933 wire wheels featuring original Aurora Red paint and bias-ply 4.50-17 Excelsior tires in front and 7.00-17 Lester tires in the rear. Other details include vintage deco-style Chrysler Airstream mirrors, an accessory turn signal on the rear bumper guard, and a rear-mounted spare wheel that serves as an antenna for the radio. The wheel is secured in place by a V8 logo hubcap which conceals a lock. A 1933 California license plate is paired with a vintage adjustable frame, reflectors, and an American flag ornament. Under the hood, a NOS Dunsford toolbox is mounted on the firewall which Gommi described as "one of the great finds of my life” in an interview with MotorTrend.

The cabin remains highly original with a ’33 Ford steering wheel and its factory woodgrain finish dashboard, instrument panel, seats, and door panels. Accessories include a Stewart-Warner oil pressure gauge, a 1940s Sun Model-D3 tachometer, vintage shift knobs, a 1933 under-dash heater, a 1934 ashtray radio paired with a concealed 1960s FM radio, Simplex drive-in movie theater speakers, and an accessory switch which activates the marker lights as turn signals.

Power comes from a bored and stroked 284ci 1948 59AB flathead V8 which was assembled by Gommi featuring an S.Co.T. supercharger, Stromberg 97 carburetor, Lincoln valve springs, and Offenhauser heads with deepened valve pockets to accommodate a high-lift Iskenderian camshaft. Other engine items include a ’33 Ford fan with custom-designed pulleys, a new mechanical throttle linkage, a Mallory points distributor, an adjustable timing gear, and a custom oil and fuel delivery system. Power is sent to the rear wheels by a ’39 Ford gearbox with a ’33 torque tube and Mitchell overdrive. The car has also been fitted with rebuilt ’40 Lincoln brakes, late Ford rear axles, and a 1950s front axle with a NOS 1933 spring.

This sale will include some documentation and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. This 1933 Ford Tudor was a creation by the late Paul A. Gommi (December 3, 1941 - January 17, 2023). He put lots of hard work and love into this build. Many people considered him a Renaissance man when it came to building hot rods and restoring old Fords. This vehicle had a special place in his heart."
