Available for auction is an authentic Mobil Pegasus sign thought to be from the 1930’s. This Mobil Pegasus measures approximately 46”x 35” in size and is constructed from steel. The sign features a left-facing flying horse painted in red and white and is estimated to have been manufactured sometime in the 1930’s. The seller states the sign is in good condition but with some rust and patina (see gallery).

The winged horse used to be part of the Mobil oil logo – known today as ExxonMobil after the merger with Exxon. Like every brand, the Pegasus has developed over the years and has been adapted to the popular zeitgeist. Originally derived from Greek mythology and known today as the Mobile Pegasus, it represents power, speed, performance, and immortality. The logo is now synonymous with Porsche race cars of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s and is still used to this day.

A Mobil Pegasus like this doesn’t come up to auction often so don’t miss your chance to own a rare piece of authentic Art Deco-style Americana Automobilia from one of the world's most recognized brands. The seller notes the Pegasus was obtained from a collector in New Jersey. The buyer is responsible for shipping, shipping insurance, handling, and transactional fees.

@Lomghorns and that would be a classified ad. Not an auction. O boy. Ok. Enjoy your day

  • Lomghorns (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@dodgersavage A reserve is set by a seller of what they believe its value is. It could be whatever they think and could be overvalued. A auction purpose is to create a fair market value of that item. It’s not a perspective it is a fact. The seller can do what they like, but he or she should have just listed that item for the amount they wanted instead of an auction format.
That is my perspective that I have.

@Lomghorns how does a reserve make you overpay? The point is to stop when you reach what you think is you max. Not being a wise guy. It’s just a very confusing perspective.

@dodgersavage I don’t want to overpay for something based on someone’s opinion and what they think it is worth. A auction sole point is for the bidders to make the market at what they believe is a fair market value. This is also determined in many fields of antiques.

  • dodgersavage (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

@Lomghorns just curious. Why would there being a reserve make you go out?

  • Lomghorns (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

Didn’t know there was a reserve I’ll probably be out

Final hour of the auction. Thank you all for the bids so far, but there's still plenty of ground to cover to meet the reserve. I suggest to bid where you want to be or what you're comfortable with.

@W31SSACH Thank you so much for the details. The patina is so beautiful I would definitely sometimes be showing the rear of the piece not just the front.

@Lotusx The tail may have been repaired but it is very hard to tell. Usually there is a big weld line and I'm not seeing visual evidence of one. It may have been a hairline weld, ground flat, and covered by the rust. The metal bar may have been added for additional support very early in the sign's life, since the patina on it is consistent with the whole backside and the mounting brackets. As for the paint, it does not look to be repainted. I've seen examples that have been clearly repainted with the wrong darker red and white paint lines that extended past where they should stop.

  • Lotusx (registered bidder) 11 months, 2 weeksago

May I ask if the tail has been repaired? Other examples I have seen do not have the rear support bar. Any idea the last time this pieces has been repainted?

It is a wonderful example and the patina is fantastic!
